The Piano Boy!

The Piano Boy!

The first time I saw him, he stood under the entrance arc of our so called resplendent room that was our piano aka music room. He wasn't resplendent looking though, he had a slovenly tuz of hair and shabby, torn clothes. He wasn't at all somebody you'd want in a grand music class, he belonged in his ramshackle hut. But that was what I thought when I first saw him, not after I was vastly enlightened. Anyways, he came with a eager look on his patchy face and a very charming smile that could melt anyone's heart, but not mine. I was very assertive on the type of students I enrolled, only the one's coming from a wealthy family with proper, acceptable clothes and scoured hair, and most vitally; I wanted someone with talent and passion for music...could this indigent boy give me these qualities. I thought no, so I turned him down straight away. "Why!?" He responded, "I play the piano beautifully. Hear from me before turning me down." He was right, I knew he was right back then as well, but I was hesitant and I turned him down again. As hesitant as I was, he was stubborn and adamant as well, "Let me play just one time..., just one time please." And yes, I finally gave in, all in view of the fact that my other students were ogling at us from behind. "Yes!" He screamed, "Yes, yes, yes!"

"But..." I interrupted his moment of pleasure. "But, you won't play on your filthy piano, you will only play on our stunning one!" And I pointed to the pride of my life, the pride of the room and the most sumptuous thing in the room. Clearly he was speechless, happy and speechless. I led him to the piano, knowing he would play so badly that he'd be embarrassed of himself and run away, taking his bad odor with him. All my other students watched including me, as the boy seated himself on the velvet colored and velvet textured chair. And then the whole World changed for me, and the things I predicted never came to light. In fact, the boy played like a pro, played better than any of my students, his melodies sweet and tranquil filling the room. He played with shut eyes and trembling lips, he played and played and we watched and gaped in a whole different state of mind. And then everything stopped, the melodies stopped and the tranquility was lost, I was back to reality. SILENCE. MORE SILENCE, and then everyone applauded....yes, including me!

The moment was undoubtedly a new one for the boy, clearly no one had applauded for him in his whole life, perhaps nobody had even appreciated him in his whole life and this being the first time: tears formed in his dazzling brown eyes. It was a wondrous moment to watch and then, "Uhmm!" I sounded, "You did ok...and you've passed the test." A smile appeared on his face, the same charming smile, and as he rubbed the tears off his eyes he said, "Does that mean I come for classes every alternate days from now on?!" "Yes." I said coolly, "Yes, you come for general music every alternate days. Mind you, you got to be be punctual, I won't tolerate any ill behavior. Also, we'll have tests every month, so are you ready?" He nodded his head still awe struck and flabbergasted. But suddenly a thought came to my mind, "But...how will you...? You're...you won't have the money....! How will you pay the expenses of the class?" And then he smiled, not the usual charming smile, but a naughty mischievous one. "I'm not poor, I don't dress like this usually and I have a better piano than this one!" Shocked, I was shocked and before I could say "WHATT!?" He pronounced, "My father is the owner of this music hall, and he directed me to play this act...he wanted to test all the teacher's capability and their modesty.. and I see you've passed the test, nearly." And he walked out of the room. It was me, who was awe struck and flabbergasted now. "What a good actor!" I thought.
