Tell me why

"Do you know the story of the circus elephant?" I asked my 5-year-old son who shook his head, "The circus people tie the elephant cub with chains. Since it is small, it can't break the chain no matter how much it tries. As it grows old, it stops trying and stays chained."

My son just looked at me.

"The moral of the story is, question everything, even those that you are told from childhood not to question."

That conversation of 25 years ago, now comes back to haunt me as my son has turned atheist and married outside our religion.

The moral of the story, like a joke, is now on me - Some traditions are better to be followed blindly without questioning.
