The grey light of dawn began to seep through the cracks in the bungalow’s shutters. Vanya, still wrapped in Arjun’s heavy sweater, sat cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by the contents of the rusted metal box.

Arjun sat opposite her, his laptop open, cross-referencing the names in the ledger with modern land-registry data he had pulled from the library’s digital backup.

"Look at this," Vanya whispered, her finger tracing a line in the ledger. Her professional archivist training was kicking in, pushing back the exhaustion. "The water rights weren't just diverted to the Khanna estate. They were routed through a 'holding company' called Himalayan Peaks Development."

Arjun leaned in, his shoulder brushing hers. "That name... it was on the letterhead of the resort proposal Sameer showed the board last month."

"Exactly," Vanya said, her eyes sharpening with realization. "The company wasn't founded by Sameer. It was founded by his father in 1952. Arjun, the reason our grandfathers signed this agreement wasn't just greed. Look at the attached notes."

She pulled out a set of smaller, brittle slips of paper—handwritten memos in English. As she read them aloud, the true horror became clear.
“To Malhotra & Khanna: The municipal audit of 1951 is complete. I have the records of the tax evasion from both your houses. Sign the diversion over to Himalayan Peaks, or the Inspector arrives on Monday.”

"It was a double blackmail," Arjun realized, his voice flat with anger. "Sameer’s father caught our grandfathers in a financial trap and forced them to steal from each other to save themselves. He fueled the feud to keep them from ever comparing notes. If they stayed enemies, they’d never realize who the real thief was."

But the biggest piece of evidence was a modern document Vanya found tucked into the back of the ledger—a recent land survey Sameer had tried to hide. "Arjun," she gasped. "The resort Sameer is building... the 'legal' boundary he’s using is based on the forged 1952 map. But because that map was never officially ratified by the state—it was only a private agreement—the land he’s cleared for the hotel actually still belongs to the Malhotra estate. To you."

Arjun stared at the map. "He’s already poured the foundation for a fifty-crore resort on land he doesn't legally own."

"He’s trespassing on a massive, corporate scale," Vanya added. "If we take this to the Shimla High Court, the construction gets an immediate stay order. His investors will pull out in a week. He won't just be embarrassed; he’ll be bankrupt."

They looked at each other. For the first time, they weren't just two lovers hiding in a ruin. They were the holders of a secret that could dismantle the most powerful man in Kasauli.

But the sound of gravel crunching outside cut their triumph short. It wasn't the heavy SUV of Sameer. It was the rhythmic, high-pitched "thwack-thwack" of a walking stick on the porch.

Vanya’s face went pale. "That’s my father."
