My Little Secret
My Little Secret
The wooden window creaked every time the wind pressed against it, as if it were whispering secrets into the night. Miriam sat by it, her eyes fixed on the horizon where the sunset bled into the sea.
To her children, she was just an aging widow who lived quietly, tending her garden and humming old hymns. But beneath the fragile smile and tired hands lay a secret that had clawed at her for decades.
It began in her youth, when she had been part of a classified research project—one that studied weapons so destructive that even whispers of their existence could shake nations.
She had walked away from it, believing she had left the horror behind. But the formulas she carried in her memory, locked away like treasure, never left her.
Now, as she neared seventy, Miriam had received a message slipped under her door: We know what you built. We know what you hide. When the countdown ends, they will fall.
Her breath caught as she read it again and again. Doomsday. A few days away.
And her loved ones, innocent and oblivious, were scattered across cities that would be the first to burn.
She wrote letters—warnings, instructions, confessions—but paper felt too weak a shield against what was coming. So she called her family home.
They gathered, confused by her urgency. Around the kitchen table, Miriam’s voice trembled as she spoke the truth: about the project, the weapon, and the secret she had carried all these years.
Her children stared in disbelief. Her eldest son whispered, “Mother… if this is true, then you are the fuse.”
The clock struck midnight. The wind howled, rattling the wooden window.
And then it began. A low vibration in the ground, a distant siren, the sound of glass shattering in the village below. Her children clung to one another, terrified.
Miriam pressed her hands to her face. Was it my confession that triggered it? Or had I only unmasked what was already set in motion?
The house shook.
Candles blew out. Outside, the horizon glowed red.
Miriam looked at her children one last time. “I kept my secret to protect you.
But perhaps it is the secret itself that has destroyed us.”
The wooden window burst open, and the world beyond it was swallowed in fire.
