Justice for George Floyd

Most of the county is celebrating the  guilty verdict of police officer Derek Chauvin, who was pronounced guilty Tuesday on all three charges in connection with the May 2020 death of George Floyd, after one of the most closely watched criminal trials in recent memory.

I know for many like myself this was heartbreaking to watch when it first happened and even more so as we followed this trial. How could one human being be so callous in killing another human being? How can you listen to a person tell you over and over he couldn't breathe and yet you do nothing? How could your partner watch and do nothing? Where is your decent human compassion for another person? This officer clearly didn't have any as he sat on George Floyd's neck with his hands in his pockets and killed him.

What has happened to the police department? But the bigger question is why is it allowed to continue? Everyday people of color are being brutally murdered by police officers across this country. Now don't get your panties in a wade. I am not for defunding the police, we need the police, I am for reform. We need to make sure that the power doesn't go to their head. We need guidelines in place to do extensive background searches to find out where they stand with racism, with the groups they support and who they hang out with.

We need to make it mandatory that they have more training than it takes to be a hairstylist. Yes, you read that right it takes 2,000 hours of training to be a hairstylist and in a few months you can walk in become a police officer with whatever baggage you brought and they will issue you a gun and a badge and all the power to walk out there and kill someone and get away with it all because you are a "officer" I call bullshit!

I also call bullshit on the fact that they are constantly moving bad officers to other precincts when they get into trouble and no one says anything.

Hello, that's as bad as the paedophile priests that are moved from one church to another when they get caught abusing children, where the hell does that make any sense? We need to change this, we need to take away their benefits, their retirement and have severe consequences for these officers that kill or have a record of strong arming people. Now I am not saying all police are bad but there are definitely many bad apples in the bunch that have to go.

As we witnessed during this trial many of his own stood up and called him out and we need more of this. For so many years that had this brotherhood where they would stick together no matter what but now some people are coming forward saying enough is enough. Where are the police who knew their neighborhoods, who went above and beyond to help? Unfortunately there are not many left and we need to change that.

How can you tell me a 26 year veteran officer didn't know the difference between her taser and her gun as she was holding it in front of her and shot a suspect to death? Even if she realized it at the last second, she could have shot him in the leg.

How do you come into someone's home and shoot them dead in their bed? There are so many tragic stories of killing of people of color that if this was happening to white people, you would have already seen a change. Unfortunately in some ways we are still living in the 40s and 50s where they are still fighting for their basic human rights and we should be ashamed of ourselves that this is still going on in 2021.

So today my friends, as I am always saying in this blog, you need to be the change you want to see.

We must unite together and change these laws because somehow we forgot that we have the power to do so. Look what happens when we come together, change happens.

We need to enforce better training, better background checks, social media checks, taking away pension and benefits. We need to stop allowing them to hide behind their badges as these are the only things that will change this situation.

Don't defund the police, retrain them.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Floyd family as this will never bring him back, but at least we all who cried with you got some kind of justice.
