When Netra was born, I was elated! We’d been trying for a child for 2 years. I’d even suffered a miscarriage, but holding her made us forget all the pain. One of us was always singing to her & playing peek–a–boo with her made us feel like children again; she'd scream when she saw us!

All was well until she was 1.5 years; Netra started feeling weak & her belly began swelling. She could barely turn her body. My wife told me, 'She has fever & bloody stools.' A local doctor gave us some medicines, but it was only a short term solution.

Netra would have severe pelvic pain & one of us would have to accompany her to the loo for hours. She’d sob as she had no control over her bowel movements. She'd have constipation & would be miserable.

Netra's playschool told us, 'She can't study here with her condition'; it was heartbreaking to hear that. We ran from one local hospital to another but no doctor could detect the actual problem.

As her stomach started bloating, people stopped visiting our home. 'Your baby is cursed,' they'd say. Finally, we visited a hospital in the city. And that's where we were told–Netra's has Hirschsprung's Disease. Her condition can prove fatal,' the doctor said. I cried, 'I’ve already lost a child & I can't lose Netra.'

Both of us resorted to borrowing & begging to raise funds. We’re farmers & barely earn Rs.7000 a month. Then, I had to stay back home to take care of her. At times she looked as if she was going to die in my arms.

But Netra bravely made it through 3 surgeries. After that, the doctors said, 'Netra requires a major surgery that will cost Rs 20 lakh. It’s the only way to save her.' We broke down; we've used up all our savings already.

10 days ago, Netra slipped into a coma; she’s on a ventilator. Now, we sit by her bedside & tell her how much we love her. When she wakes up, we want to give her an education, we want to watch her have fun in the park! We want her to lead a peaceful life! A part of us is dying with her in the hospital. She’s our whole world & we won’t be able to bear her loss…she’s all we have.
