Exit Interview
I sit across from HR, nodding at questions that feel pre-filled, like forms already signed.
Why are you leaving?
I don’t remember arriving.
They slide a file toward me—my name, my handwriting, performance reviews praising a version of me I can’t place. “You were reliable,” she says gently. “Too reliable.”
When did you decide to quit?
I didn’t. The resignation email was sent at 3:17 a.m., from my account, apologizing for exhaustion I don’t recall feeling.
As I stand to leave, she hands me my badge. It’s warm, as if just worn.
“Good luck,” she says.
Outside, I check my phone.
New email. Subject line: Welcome Aboard.
