Abi's first day on the job - your honeymoon period is Over
My friend, who has more than ten years of professional experience in top-tier multinationals, has joined a leading multinational Logistics firm in Gujarat.
Abi formed pretty sure he arrived at the office 30 minutes well before scheduled time. He was escorted by an HR representative to a grand lobby for his induction and paperwork. Tea and biscuits were served to make him feel at ease. HR handed him a slew of legal paperwork to fill out. It took him nearly an hour to fill in the blanks. HR went through the routine of verifying medical certificates and tallying educational certificates with photocopies.
It was time for lunch after watching a couple of videos about the company and its CSR activities. HR handed him a food coupon and asked him to return in 1 hour.
On his first day, he ate his lunch quietly, completed his mandatory smoking round, and returned to the HR Lobby.
After going over the company policies and standard procedures, the entitlements and benefits were discussed. His HR colleague also shared his KRAs and KPIs. Abi's reporting manager made certain that the Sales team had individual KRAs and KPIs from the start. The sales team was introduced to Abi. Following the customary chat and formal introductions to various departments, at around 4 p.m., his HR buddy pushed him to his reporting manager (VP - Sales).
The VP took a moment to look at Abi as he pretended to be analyzing revenue figures. Hey, your honeymoon period is over; start selling right away. Furthermore, I am emphasizing that I am a very busy person who requires minimal interruptions. Give me your sales strategy and timelines for capturing new business.
Abi was used to harsh words in the sales industry, but not the treatment he received today. This incident had a profound effect on him, and he immediately decided to look for alternatives. He was done with preparing Sales prospects and closing a large deal.
Regrettably, Covid-19 struck in less than 15 days, and that was the beginning of the end.
