Chapter 1

“somewhere in northern Europe…”

2011

The thirsty throat and a whole lot of sweat on his face made Sam Richardson wake up from his irregular sleep, a condition which he was facing for several months. Quickly taking a glance at his watch had left him with a sense of despondency as it displayed 3:00 a.m.

Darkness being his little old friend always cramped him from getting out of his bed and move downstairs to sip some water. He is still the same old introvert that used to exist once. This is the main motive behind speaking his thoughts aloud.

The tremendous villa based wooden house with a green backyard is pretty big for this one single fella.

In the light of dazzlingly lit street lamps, he noticed a truck parked in the neighborhood. He was about to trigger a false alarm but promptly realized that the things were being unloaded out of the truck, exactly opposite of what he thought it could be, a robbery.

He uttered, “new neighbors? Strange, who would move into a house at 3 ridiculous a.m.?”

That house was untenanted from the time before he moved in here. He hoped it to be a rich family as he always adored the idea of making rich friends around.

Right from his window, a minute or so, he observed what’s happening on the other side.

Just about when he's grappling to fall back asleep, he seems to be worried that if he couldn't get back to sleep on time, his date scheduled for tomorrow gets ruined.

“Where did I keep that box of sleeping pills? Ah! there it is” he took the last pill in that box.

Heavy rays of sunlight penetrating through the windows, hit his eyes sharp, that made him wake up. He wondered, “Oh! Lord. What a strong dose, it was!” that made him pass out till the noon.

On the bright side, that did save him the cost of breakfast that day.

He thought it would a fabulous idea to be the first to greet the neighbors, but felt silly about it as it is noon already.

Quickly relinquishing that idea, he started to give a try on a few pick-up lines that should be effective enough to make her fall for him as he has a date to attend with his colleague, Sharon Ruperts, the newly recruited reporter who joined their team a few months back.

She is referred to as a fox in their workplace, sneaks into every conversation looking for details. Debunking the rumors that circulate, some praised her abilities while the rest agonized to the consequences that were brought upon hating her. Competitively eliminating the colleagues who bothered her, is a skill that she mastered. People compliment her by advising her to quit working there as she deserved much more than an underpaid reporting job. She listens, but never cares to acknowledge. Always in a mood to get high anytime and anywhere, she’s engaged to alcohol and married to euphoria.

Spreading the peanut butter on the bread, that is about to expire on the same day, he read the lines out one by one, “Hey, aren’t you tired? Coz you’re constantly running in my mind.”

Eating that slice of bread, he thought “Not bad. Tastes much better with the sauce.”

Being a guy who runs behind ideas that make him stand apart from the rest as being the first to always thrive for attention on he aimed for the best.

The inputs through the internet would’ve helped, however his stubbornness confined him from doing so.

Practicing a few more lines, “This might work. Let's give it a try.”

“Do you believe in angels? Well, looking at you blush. I do now.”

Giving a pat on his right butt cheek, he exclaimed his wit and was exceptionally excited about the dinner. Along with that, he began to read ‘how to impress an albatross?’, which he acquired at a cheaper price in a bookstore.

He brushed his teeth twice before leaving the house with the toothbrush that almost gave up on its life. The toothpaste was cut open by the scissors to utilize the best out of it. The socks were completely torn out below the ankle but that didn’t stop him from wearing that. The sole of his shoes slightly came out of shape which he managed to get back in shape by making use of the glue.

The loud music on his television kept him engaged as he wanted to stay in a regular day mood to keep the conversation a bit casual, like an everyday talk. The condition of the remote is inexplainable and lends him trouble always. When he tried to switch it off it paused at a news channel,

‘Meanwhile, the cops have reportedly busted a human trafficking mafia red-handed. The police have also assured that this breakthrough assists in ending the drug mafia mystery that rumored to be happening in this town for the past few years. They have thanked the news reporters that helped them keep their lives at stake in order to rescue these innocent women. The further details are yet to be revealed to the media in the coming days.’
