I walked in there, thinking I was complete.

The music of chatter swept me off my feet,

Silent tears were shed as I took my seat,

A smirk on my face, I was there to compete.

I looked around at the colours displayed.

Cyan, crimson and gold- not a moment was I swayed.

Bows and courtesies, disregard danced in the air.

Invisible glares, too much did everyone care.

They asked me how I was, about the little things,

Always ignoring the little exchange of rings.

With pretence, I smiled my sweet little princess smile,

Dreading the worst that was yet to come- my trial.

True happiness of only a few reached my heart.

The ignorance of others, I considered an art.

Painted like the rest, I failed to be myself,

I was an empty vase, meant to be kept on the shelf.

Lucky was I that my soul remained awake,

Cleansing auras with each step and breath, I needed a break!

The airs and graces, everyone seemed extremely nice,

They would have to go on and on, if it was to suffice.

One saw the other, yet was oblivious to their presence.

One man for himself- that was the complete essence.

I proceeded to observe, an impression was to be made.

Discovering opportunities to destroy, my mind said ‘raid!’

Stopping though, for a pat or a tousle or two,

Winking at my mischief, what else was I to do?

Momentarily satisfied, I reveled in prideful bliss.

Lying and laughing, like a playful and gentle kiss.

For inside me I knew that everything would be gone,

A faded illusion as they sun brought the morn.

I snorted when I realised that I had tried to be one of them,

I will always stand out though, a lovely shining gem.

For all I need to do is be myself and close my eyes,

Be truthful and in the end, I will rise…
