Seven Svaras - A Celebration Of Song
Seven Svaras - A Celebration Of Song
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni
The seven svaras
Interchangeably,
Continuously, tunefully
Recurring and repeating
In enthusiastic euphony,
Sometimes together, chiming
In harmonious accord,
Or they flow one after the other
Never jangling nor jostling but
Forming new and resonant melodies
That linger in our ear, so we succumb
And join in singing - or hum along -
With each song chorus of such beauty
“Oh ankh Uthi!”
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni
The seven svaras
So effortlessly combine together
Making musical magic
That bubbles from a well -
Whose source is so old
That even the wisest scholars
Can only agree it is a mystery –
These seven notes are sung,
Plucked, whistled and trumpeted
In a never-ending throng of songs
By a million million musicians
And yet each one’s miraculously unique.
The svaras spin a spell we cannot break
That the satara casts upon the cobra
And the lover lavishes upon the beloved.
When we listen to the music,
Notes, musician, listener are as one:
‘Main toh teri sai yaan’
