First Love

First Love

I met this girl at nineteen in paradise,

I remember how her eyes shined so brightly.

She came over and how my heart beat so fast,

Begging and pleading one kiss before I die at last.

Her smile, her laugh,

How they filled my soul like nothing else.

I fell for her so deeply and quickly,

We connected for days and weeks.

Then one fateful night she stayed with me,

I remember kissing her deep into the night,

Waking up with her still by my side.

I asked her early if she’d be mine for life,

She spoke some words that stole my breath.

She said please don’t hate me,

See I only want you as a friend.

She told me how some other guy,

Hurt her another time, and how in her mind.

Love just wasn’t worth the time.

She told me how she had these dark thoughts,

Said she was haunted by this voice telling her to die.

That her past would be too much for me,

Oh, how I wanted her to see,

That the scars didn’t bother me.

I only wanted to help with the healing,

I watched as she slowly slipped away.

And that warm shoulder turn so cold,

As I tried just one last to hold her.

I learned that day that even the most beautiful,

Can leave you feeling so empty.
