Cave Creatures

Hello! You in there - yes, you in the cave,

Sitting tight with your back to the light

Do you see the shadows on the wall?

Do you see them walk, and dance?

Given a chance, they run and fall.

And pick themselves up, one and all,

And rush off somewhere,

They don't know where.

Or what to do when they

Do get there!

 

Hey! You! How would you like 

To turn your head?

To see your face so sad and wise,

Staring from my wormhole eyes?

 

No? Then break your chains.

Run for the life that is and is not -

Don't look back. There's the railway track,

Slimy and wet in the rains.

Don't ask what hit your spine

Or why the stars shine

Before all goes black.

 

For this one black is all there is for you –

No sun, no moon, no icy dust from alien rock.
