Blindfolds

Blindfolds

Why does she have–

Blindfolded eyes?

To signify impartiality, right?

But does it hinder her vision,

Does it cloud her mind?

Does she stagger in injustice dark,

’cause blindfolded are her eyes?

What use is the sword, a little unsheathed,

If one can’t immediately strike?

What use is the scale,

If gravity is absent nigh ?

If open-eyed, would she have seen,

Injustice brimming at the seams,

Of hope, of calm, of serenity, of peace.

Does being blindfolded make her slow?

Doesn’t the thud of the hammer, over the years,

Not bore her, tire her, sound painful in her ears ?

Does the pain, the shouts for help, the cries,

Not reach her ears, ’cause blindfolded are her eyes?

Are confessions not enough?

Remedial measures continue to snuff–

The life, the vigor, the hope, the voice, the yearn,

Out of the victim, the survivor, the poor, the oppressed.

And when she is finally poised

To pass the verdict- something to be prized,

Years on end have passed away,

Desperation, hopelessness, compromise in their sway.

And when at last she opens her lips,

Not one but all realize,

That ’cause blindfolded were her eyes,

Injustice in the garb of justice delayed,

Stabbed her staid,

And the sufferer felt betrayed.
