Weatherproof Your Heart

Weatherproof Your Heart

Brick by brick and stone by stone,

Build yourself up into your own portable home.

Expand, and renovate your thoughts and thinking,

Challenge your labyrinth by adding more levels and rooms.

Rooms to grow, rooms where there is quiet, rooms just for show.

Secret cabinets that contain emotional Knick knacks you’ve been hoarding.

Not for all eyes except the ones who’ve taken an interest in your being.

Brick by brick and stone by stone

Assemble your home

And notice those who stop by to offer you a helping hand.

A bit of cement to strengthen the foundation.

Notice those who stand by you and build you up as you build your own.

These kind are building too, building along with you.

Be warned, you will also encounter

Some lousy people who, as you build, will talk about trivialities on your front lawn.

Those distracting noises that aren’t malicious, just ill timed and ill benefiting.

The worst are those who’d pretend to carry with you but smuggle your garden rose.

They’d stand around and talk sweet words,

all the while keep you from noticing

The lawn furniture, ornaments and treasured troves.

All stealthily stowed away from your sight, in a midday robbery.

Guard your home. Guard your heart.

But remember it rains down on us all.

You cannot weatherproof your own heart.

A rose can neither blossom without sunshine.

Thunders are calculated risks worth taking in hopes of nurturing rays.

You will have good days and bad.

But oh darling, you cannot weatherproof your own heart.

The only way to test, is move into what you’ve built.

Be exposed to the temper of the weather

To know where it creaks and

Know where is the safest plinth.

There is no better teacher than experience and no better time than now

To test out and improve on all that you’ve built.

Observe, notice, listen and evaluate where there needs to be an alteration,

Seek help where necessary. We can’t be all super specialists in this tech-mutated generation.

Assess the fortes and weak points of your foundation

and build an action plan to rectify the errors.

You may not have the resources now, but you must have patience

To save, gather and strategise to mend the flaws.

Once you have all you need, prioritise this, prioritise yourself

And get down to do the dirty work. Building takes strength, sweat, vision, faith and resilience.

Faith in you, faith in your vision, faith in what you’re building and faith in people too.

It’ll slowly but surely come together.

Make do with the blinds that blockout the light for now,

And save for those damask curtains you’ve been dreaming of.

But also be open to the idea that in a few years,

Your choices may have changed,

And you’re more of a sheer curtain person by now.

But keep building, keep improving.

Humanity is beautiful, but humans are flawed.

Allow yourself some margin of error and scope of change,

We don’t measure on a scale, we’re easier to understand on a spectrum range.

Build not a temporary shelter to protect you from this temporary weather,

But build for a life from the start.

Because my darling, you can surely people proof

But you cannot weatherproof your own heart.
