Wonderland Through My Window

Wonderland Through My Window

I was holidaying at my hometown when the announcement of nation-wide lockdown was made due to COVID pandemic. With no option to travel back amidst the lockdown, I was a tad bit low but then I was equally happy to spend quality time with my parents after a very long time. With nowhere to go and very limited interaction with the outside world, work from home can be really demanding. At this point of time I was reintroduced to my own wonderland, courtesy my window. I set up my work station next to the window which opened to the adjacent vacant plot with many trees.

During initial days, an occasional glance to the birds chirping away would bring back my childhood memories but later on, I realised there was so much of wonder that I had not explored. One particular day, I found a never seen colourful bird chirping away happily unknown to the crisis playing out in the world. Fascinated by the sight of it, I googled it up and got to know about the bird. Then, I started observing more intently and I saw a variety of birds, new and old ones, on a daily basis which normally we wouldn’t see nowadays or are too busy to notice. Soon it became a daily routine for finding something new. However, capturing them on camera was a challenge as they would just fly away at an instant, but their image captured in my memory.

I saw not only birds like parrots, koels, crows, sparrows and many unknown colourful ones but also furry creatures like squirrels, mongoose and monkeys. The monkeys would just prance on the papaya and mango trees and then just ran away. Colourful butterflies flapping their wings as if the show was specifically for me. I realised that just observing the squirrels running and scurrying away, jumping from one branch to another and making sounds would brighten my days. I was so fascinated by one tiny squirrel, which was leaning to eat the ripened mango fruit as if the scene was straight out of the cartoons and animated movies.

Work aside, these small glimpses from time to time has brought so much of joy, happiness and positivity in me. With our busy schedule, we seem to have lost touch with nature but these past two months have helped me to reconnect with nature. Now every day when I open my window, I look forward to the show nature will put up for me. This is my wonderland through my window which will forever be etched in my memory.
