In great sorrow he was, his lifelong companion was no more, but he still found happiness. He was happily ready to live the rest of his life in this condition , rather than subject her to what he was going through right then.

But with enough force, even toughened steel breaks, and her demise hit him like an unstoppable force, breaking down till he could not get up. He was defeated and down, his one love no more, his one love who had made his miserable life worth living.

She was the only one who understood his swinging moods, his short temper and his irrational behaviour . If she was the rose, he was the thorn. But without the rose, of what purpose is the thorn?.

He would always be irritated when her beautiful hair brushed upon his face, when she would pester him to go shopping with her, when she would stop talking for hours even though the mistake was hers. But he would now trade anything he had for reliving those moments, just one more time.

He was alone many times in his life, but for the first time he felt lonely.

The fear of what would happen next, the fear of uncertainty crushed him and his already defeated mind.

Men don't cry, said his mind, people do, reassured his heart. but cry as much as he would , there would be no one to wipe his tears. It felt like being stabbed in the heart a hundred times, yet being alive to experience the pain each time.

He had all the money he would require, but he realized the meaning of the word priceless that day. The moments he spent with her were exactly that. If only it had not taken him her passing to realize this.

Tears would not stop draining, moistening his toughened face, the heart wouldn't stop paining, and his brain wouldn't stop thinking, thinking about the past, the present and the future.

He would sometimes feel jealous of her, though they worked in the same field, she was more talented, more accomplished than he would ever be. But what he thought of was her shadow on him, was actually her shade. Her shade which had sheltered him, encouraged him and made him reach greater heights. Now he would have to face the full brightness of the sun. Regret and gratefulness filled his mind. Endless thoughts like this drove him to the edge of insanity, aggravating his situation .

He swallowed half a dozen sleeping pills, but can the sun ever be blocked by a mountain for long?.

He finally slept that night, wishing that he would never see the rays of the sun the next morning.
