Mia woke up with a start! She looked around and wondered what made her wake up. She looked around and saw him sitting in a corner. She realised his presence must have disturbed her sleep. Lately, she was getting more and more irritated by his constant presence. Why couldn't he just leave her alone? He had been her constant companion since years now, and though when she had first met him he had been her world, now he had started becoming a constant bother.

Mia first met him when she was thirteen. One fine morning, mother was tying her hair in 2 tight plaits, when she looked in the mirror, she felt that the two plaits were not same, one of them seemed a little twisted. While she was looking at herself, she suddenly saw his reflection. He was standing right behind her, his lips very close to her ears. And then he whispered in her ears, "Yes Mia, your plaits are not equal. It is not looking very nice. Everyone will laugh at you and tease you in school." Mia was surprised and looked back, but couldn't see anyone. She looked back in the mirror, and there he was. She was thinking to herself "Who is this boy? " As if sensing her thoughts, he smiled and whispered again. "Oh! Sorry Mia, how rude of me! Let me introduce myself. I am your new friend. My name is WhatWillPeopleSay!" Mia frowned to herself, thinking that she must be dreaming. Just when she was looking at him and thinking, mother called her. She was getting late for school, she picked her bag and rushed out, forgetting all about WhatWillPeopleSay. That day, all day, she was conscious about her twisted plaits, though no one really said anything about it to her.

As years passed, however, WhatWillPeopleSay became Mia's best friend. One day, when she was 16, she and her mother decided to go shopping. When mother came out dressed and ready to go out, she was wearing a bright pink dress. Mia had always liked bright colours while growing up. And bright pink used to be her favourite. But WhatWillPeopleSay did not like bright colours very much and so now Mia had also started avoiding bright colours. Mia was very upset with her mother for wearing such a bright dress. Mother did not understand, she said: "But Mia, you yourself had made me buy this dress last year." Mia did not know what to do. She secretly did like the dress, but she was scared of WhatWillPeopleSay.

Over years, many times Mia found herself in similar situations, secretly wanting something but fearing WhatWillPeopleSay. She based a lot of her decisions on the wishes of WhatWillPeopleSay. It did make her unhappy at times, but knowing that WhatWillPeopleSay would be proud of her, she just went along with it. WhatWillPeopleSay helped her in the most important decisions of life, such as her career choices, her life partner, starting her family and also a lot of mundane everyday decisions, such as what to wear, what to eat, how to speak were also taken after conferring with him. But as she neared 40, she had started regretting a few of those decisions. She had started feeling that her life wasn't hers since the day he had entered her life. He had taken over every aspect of her life.

But today, when she woke up startled and saw him lurking in the corner of her room, a smug smile on his face, she was very angry with herself. She suddenly realised that her dependency on WhatWillPeopleSay had gone on too long and too far! She had given up too much for him and he had only demanded more and more in return. Not once had he acknowledged her sacrifices, not once had he rewarded her with praise for doing so much for him. Mia had had enough. In that split second, all those times that she had listened to WhatWillPeopleSay passed before her eyes and she decided something very firmly... She picked the heavy candle stand kept on her bedside table and threw it at the mirror in which she could see him. The mirror shattered into thousands of pieces and his reflection disappeared. At that moment Mia felt such a surge of relief passing over her mind! She felt happy like she hadn't felt since the day he had entered her life. That day she made up her mind. Never ever would she let him return. She had to give up his friendship for her sanity and happiness! That day Mia was free!!!

Mia did get free, but what about you? Is your best friend What Will People Say peeping out from behind your reflection?
