In a small mountainous village, there lived a boy called Paresh with his mother and sister. They were so poor that, neither he nor his sister could go to school like many other village children. They earned their living by grazing the cattle of their wealthy neighbours and also fetching wood from the forest in the early mornings. Their mother used to cook meal for themselves in the evening after the arrival of the children from their work and eat together and go to bed early, so that they could rise again very early next morning for the arduous day's work. Despite their hardship they led a very happy albeit simple life. Sometimes on a day of relatively less amount of work, Paresh used to play hide and seek with other neighbouring children.

One morning Paresh found that, his sister was down with fever. He was unwilling to go to work but Mukhia Ramlal came to their door and ordered to graze his sheep at once. Poor chap Paresh had no other alternatives but to obey Mukhia's order alone sadly. He was anxious about his sister's health as he knew his mother can do nothing if her condition deteriorates. Anyway, Paresh took sheep herd to the nearby meadow. Although he was anxious and eager to return home early, he never evaded his duty. But while returning, one sheep suddenly climbed down the hill to drink water from small but very fast flowing river and suddenly slipped and fell into it and was floating away. Seeing this, Paresh jumped into the river to save it. He found himself very difficult to move forward in the strong current. But he was desperate to save Mukhia's sheep. For he knew that if one sheep would go missing, Mukhia would penalise him from his paltry remuneration. Which would deter him to go to doctor for the treatment of his sister and also to buy medicine. So, he swam into the current and grabbed a big rock and somehow managed to reach the sheep. He then toiled hard to pull the sheep back successfully and almost reached the bank, when he suddenly tumbled against a submerged rock and lost his balance. But by then he was able to push the sheep back to the shore. But he was desperately trying to gain his foothold and also to grab a stone with one hand but alas, he was flown away by the strong merciless current and lost altogether.
