ARDEN’S POV

I watch, with Abby’s body cradled safely in my lap as Cassy stares unbelievingly at Charlie. “What?” She asks lowly again. Charlie’s expression softens, as he takes in his sister.

He steps closer to her, reaching his hand up to squeeze her shoulder before he remembers that he can’t touch her. He clenched his fist before dropping it to his side, his shoulders slumping. “It’s over, Cass. Don is getting picked up in the morning and going to jail for a really long time. The evidence that I provided was enough to make sure of it.” Cassy lowers herself to the ground, sitting there like a broken little girl. Charlie kneels beside her.

Watching the exchange was strange. As if I were eavesdropping on a very private conversation, so I turn my head, looking down at the girl in my lap. Brushing some hair away from her face, I softly call to her.

“Abby?” She twitches in my arms and her eyes flutter but doesn’t open. Trying again, I run my fingers along her cheek. “Baby, come on. Wake up. Come back to me.” Leaning down, I brush my lips against hers briefly before pulling away.

Abby’s eyes flutter open as she looks around in a daze. When her vision focuses on me, she smiles that breathtaking smile of hers, albeit a little weak, and lifts her hand to cup my cheek. “Arden?”

I let out a shaky breath as my lips meet hers once more in desperation. I pour all of my feelings into it, how scared I was to lose her, how angry I was that there was even a possibility of her leaving, and how much in love with her I am.

After the kiss broke, I lean my forehead against hers as we breathe rapidly. “I love you, Abby. I love you so damn much.” Looking into her eyes, although tired, I could see how much my words mean to her. The pure joy radiating from her, sends my happiness over the edge. My lips meet hers once more before she pulls away.

“I love you too, Arden. Now can you help me stand up?” I quickly stand, easily bringing her up with me. When her feet land on the ground, she sways. I wrap my arm around her waist to steady her as she leans into me.

That whole body take over thing must have taken a lot out of her. I gladly support her, taking on most of her weight so she could stay upright. The both of us turn to see Charlie and Cassy, still sat on the ground with tears in their eyes.

Abby steps their way, so I gently move us closer to them, but making sure we don’t cross the boundary just in case Cassy decides to try to jump back into Abby. I don’t think Abb

y can take much more.

They turn to face us. Cassy looking every bit of a scared small child that is just lost in life. Charlie is looking sullen but relieved. Cassy turns to Abby, standing up and coming as close as the boundary will let her.

“Abby. I’m so sorry for everything I’ve done. I hope you can forgive me, but I also want to thank you for everything you’ve done, not only for me but for both Charlie and Arden.” Cassy has tears in her eyes and her words sound sincere, but I wasn’t going to take a chance to trust it.

Abby, however, had different plans as she pushes away from me and wraps Cassy into her small arms. Cassy slumps into the embrace and buries her head into Abby’s shoulder.

Abby stokes Cassy’s hair with her good arm, and sniffles as she says. “I forgive you, Cassy. I hope you can find the peace within yourself to move on like you deserve.” Cassy squeezes Abby’s waist and pulls away.

She turns to me, guilt evident in her gaze as she looks up at me shyly. “I’m sorry, Arden. I know I hurt you, and I need you to know that I never meant to. You were right. I didn’t think about anyone else when I killed myself. I was so consumed with the pain I was in, that I didn’t think about you, Charlie or my mom… And for that, I’m deeply sorry. But, I’m happy to see that you are happy again, Abby is good for you, so don’t fuck it up, okay?”

Shit. I didn’t want to cry, least of all in front of Abby. I let out a broken laugh, trying to hold my tears at bay, before nodding. I knew I couldn’t speak without breaking down.

Finally, Cassy turns to Charlie, who was standing there, tears running down his face unashamed. Cassy’s voice breaks as she speaks. “Charlie.” She jumps into his arms, surprising us all that she didn’t go completely through him. He lets out a sob as he wraps his arms around her tightly. “I will always love you, big brother. Thank you for being the best a girl could ask for. For the first time in years, I feel completely at peace. It-it feels amazing. I feel so light and…happy. Charlie, find someone who makes you feel just like this. Light and happy.”

They hold each other for a moment longer, remembering the feeling of their embrace before she turns around, walking a few feet away before looking back over her shoulder, her smile bright as she waves at us one last time, and continues walking away before she disappears and a bright light flash.

Cassy is gone, and hopefully, she is going somewhere she can finally rest peacefully.
