"Hi, Megha!"

My best friend Neha asked exultantly over the phone.

"Hi!" I tried my best to appear pleasant.

"So what's your plan for the evening?" She asked in a smiling voice.

"Nothing, yet." I took particular care that my tone doesn't sound dull.

"Then why don't you come over here? Let's have our evening cup of coffee together at my place."

"Sure," I nodded, crushing the rebellion that rose within me in protest of the idea.

We were best friends since childhood. During those days, we were equals in everything. Both of us belonged to middle-class families, scored average marks during our schooldays and were plain in appearance. It all began one fine day when luck favored her and ditched me. She was married to the most eligible bachelor in the town. Her husband was a handsome business tycoon while mine was a humble clerk. From that day, she became an object of envy for everyone in the town especially for me. But envy is a feeling that you must hide behind a mask of pretentious mirth. So did I as I set out to her house.

Neha used to live like a queen in a palatial bungalow. A battalion of servants always surrounded her, eager to follow her orders. I pasted a smile as we greeted each other. She asked me to have a seat and I admiringly sunk down on her silky-soft sofa. I looked around as she gave orders to her servants to arrange for coffee and snacks. Everything around her spoke of luxury and grandeur. The envy buried deep down within me bubbled out on my face.

"I know what you are thinking," Neha smiled. "You want to step into my shoes, isn't it Megha?"

"N..no.." I shook my head as my face turned pale, "I mean.."

"But let me warn you that if you wish to switch places with me, the loss would be yours."

"What!" I was shocked, "how?"

"Your husband is an honest man. He toils hard every day and returns home to you in the evening."

"But mine..." Neha sighed as she took a sip from her coffee, "he stays away from home for months."

"So what's wrong with that?" I gulped down some coffee to swallow my envy. "He has to take care of such a vast business empire."

"Of-course!" Neha smirked, "and then he returns home with lots of expensive gifts for me."

"Wow! Those gifts must have made you feel so special!"

"It never makes a wife happy to discover other woman's belongings among her husband's things!"

Neha's face darkened as mine turned pale.

"It's me who should be envious of you!" Neha said with a hint of tears in her voice.
