Chapter 1

The morning sun had only just begun to warm the narrow streets of the little town.

Children in crisp white school uniforms filled the roads, their laughter louder than the chirping birds above them.

Among them was a little girl.

She couldn’t have been more than twelve years old.

Two tightly braided plaits bounced against her shoulders with every step she took.

Her spotless white shoes had already collected a thin layer of dust from the road.

A heavy school bag rested on her tiny shoulders, making her lean forward ever so slightly, while an oversized blue water bottle swung from one side to the other as she walked.

She was slightly chubby.

The kind of child who smiled with her entire face.

Her name was Rhea.

Walking beside her was her closest friend, who was already complaining.

“We’re going to be late again.”

Rhea looked ahead, her eyes suddenly sparkling.

“Wait!”

She pointed towards a narrow path hidden between two old compound walls.

“I found a shortcut yesterday.”

Her friend frowned.

“A shortcut?”

Rhea nodded excitedly.

“If we go this way, we’ll reach school much earlier.”

The two girls walked towards the narrow path.

At the end of it stood an old staircase.

Not a proper staircase.

Just uneven stone steps covered with damp mud after the previous night’s rain.

Her friend hesitated.

“It looks slippery.”

Rhea laughed.

“We’ll be fine!”

Without another thought, she placed one foot on the first step.

Then another.

She climbed happily, almost skipping from one step to the next.

Halfway up…

her foot landed on wet mud.

Everything happened in a second.

She slipped.

Her school bag pulled her backwards.

Her water bottle flew from her shoulder.

She rolled down the muddy steps with a frightened squeal.

Thud.

Silence.

For a brief moment…

even the birds seemed to stop singing.

Rhea blinked.

Her white uniform was no longer white.

Her braids had come loose.

Mud covered her arms, knees and cheeks.

She quickly looked around.

Not because she was hurt…

but because she was embarrassed.

Then…

she saw a hand.

Someone was standing one step above her.

A young man.

He was little older than her, perhaps seven or eight years.

Without saying a word…

he stretched his hand towards her.

Rhea looked at him for a second.

Then placed her tiny muddy hand in his.

He gently pulled her to her feet.

She dusted her uniform, even though it made little difference now.

Looking up at him, she smiled.

“Thank you.”

He didn’t reply.

Instead…

he quietly picked up her school bag.

Then her oversized water bottle.

Without asking…

he started climbing the muddy staircase.

After a tiny moment of confusion…

Rhea followed.

This time…

she didn’t climb alone.

He held her hand all the way to the top.

When they finally reached the last step…

he handed her bag back.

Then her water bottle.

For the first time…

he smiled.

A shy…

almost unnoticed smile.

Before she could say anything else…

he gave a small wave…

turned around…

and walked away.

Rhea stood there watching him disappear down the other side of the staircase.

She smiled.

Then looked down at her muddy shoes.

The very next morning, she chose the same route again.

As she reached the muddy staircase, he was there.

He smiled.

She smiled back.

That became their routine.

Every morning, they met on the same staircase and exchanged nothing more than a warm smile.

It wasn’t love.

It wasn’t friendship.

There were no conversations, no introductions, not even a “hello.”

Yet, somewhere between those silent smiles, the muddy staircase became more than just a shortcut to school.

It became their route.
