The Holi Of Braj

The Holi of Braj is famous for its connection with the divine Leelas of Krishna and Radharani.

It is said that when Krishna was a young boy, in his innocence he once asked his mother that how he was so dark and Radha so fair!

His mother Yashoda mockingly suggested that he should smear some color on Radha’s face so that her complexion changes to any color he wanted.

Captivated by the idea, Krishna proceeded to do so and thus, introduced the play of colors at the Holi festival.

Even today, Holi is one of the most important and celebrated festivals of Braj, where the men of Nandgaon and women of Barsana play ‘latthmar Holi’ to commemorate the playful throw of colors by Krishna on ‘Gopis’ and their resistance.
