Evan never read the fine print — no one did. But tonight, something tugged at him as he hovered over AGREE. Maybe it was the insomnia. Maybe it was the bourbon. Maybe it was the fact that the new app wanted far too many permissions.
He scrolled. And scrolled.
Paragraph 72 stopped him cold.
“By consenting, the user acknowledges prior emotional debts to Lila Maren…”
His breath hitched. Lila — his ex, vanished two years ago without goodbye. The contract continued:
“…and accepts full transfer of unresolved matters, including but not limited to: guilt, longing, missed calls, and unspoken apologies.”
He kept reading, hands trembling.
“Activation will reconnect both parties. Non-activation will result in permanent severance.”
At the bottom sat two buttons: AGREE and DECLINE.
A notification blinked beside “Agree”: Lila is waiting.
Evan’s finger hovered. His chest tightened with every memory the app claimed to own. He tried to close it, but the screen held still, pulsing softly — patiently.
He finally whispered, “What happens if I don’t?”
The phone vibrated once.
“You already did.”
