“Marriages are made in heaven” they say. It only refers to the possibility that every one’s partner in marriage is predetermined by fate while we believe we selected them! Whether everyone agrees with this concept or not, every one of us would agree that a lot of efforts and working is required in a marriage to be successful and to make your life heaven.

Let us have a look at few marriages to understand this. It might appear that I am dealing with a serious topic lightly. In reality I am driving home a serious message humorously. For the present-day youth, marriage means, Mehendi, Haldi, Sangeet and Shaadi. Lot of flowers, Ghagra choli, Kanjeevarams, Banarsi sarees and lengthy and tiring (not for the bride and groom) photo and video shoots. But it takes time to understand that marriage is much more than that.

Radhika and Krishna were a very good-looking couple, and everyone thought that they were made for each other, and two eyes were not enough to behold them. Both of them were aware of that and even before their marriage, they were always excessively careful about their appearance. Rather, they were obsessed with their looks and grooming. They would splurge their earnings on a variety of cosmetics, clothes and accessories. Both continued to behave like they did before marriage, when their parents would be running the house and they would splurge their earnings on themselves! Both were working with decent incomes. They hardly paid attention to their finances and things went on for a couple of years. Slowly their finances were in a mess and they were into debt. They both lacked maturity and financial discipline.

Let us look into Ramya and Ravi’s marriage. Ravi like Ramya at the first sight and married her and thought he loved her. Within few months after marriage, he started having insecurity about Ramya and thought every one was eying at her because she was beautiful. She was also working and found this very disturbing. Slowly his fear was diverted into suspecting her. His love for her was suffocating and intolerable. Basically, he lacked trust in his wife and his marriage. Marriage cannot work if trust is lacking between the partners.

Then let us see Sudha and Sekhar’s marriage. Both were earning and in good position. Sekhar was careful with money and after marriage slowly took control of both their finances. Sudha realized this, though his intentions were not bad, it was annoying her. She had to answer to him and account for every small expense of hers and it became restricting to her freedom and unbearable. There were regular fights between them and finally they even contemplated a divorce.

Lastly, I will take you through the marriage of Veena and Pramod. Both were very responsible and balanced couple. Theirs was a love marriage, blossomed in their office. Even before marriage they had time to understand each other. They had planned their finances well and were well disciplined to execute their plans. As a result, they bought their own house within six months of marriage. Surely their marriage would stand the test of time and would be lasting.

The main ingredients of a lasting marriage are trust, financial discipline, Freedom for both husband and wife within the scope of marriage, partnership and sharing of responsibilities, patience and tolerance. This are more important after having children.

Whether marriages are made in heaven or not, certainly they need to be cared for and nourished on this earth, to make it a happy and loving space. In these modern days, Divorce is not a taboo anymore. Though everyone should work to sustain their marriage, there is no need to tolerate abuse, indignity and control, especially for women. Marriage should not become shackles that tie women’s hands and feet, they will surely break them.
