During his first udasi, when Guru Nanak Dev Ji, along with Bhai Mardana ji reached JagannathPuri (Puri, Odisha), he witnessed that the people flocked in great numbers to a sadhu (saint), who claimed to predict people's future.

One day, there was a huge gathering in the place where the sadhu sat. While the sadhu seemed to be in a samadhi (meditation), there was a bowl placed in front of him which was full of money which people had offered to know their future.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji gently lifted the bowl and placed it right behind the sadhu. A few moments later when the sadhu opened his eyes and was surprised that the bowl was not there, he began fum

ing and asked the gathering about it. However no one replied. Guru Nanak Dev Ji then said to the sadhu that when he could predict everything, then he should be able to find out where the  bowl was, all by himself.

The sadhu became red with anger, but could neither find the bowl nor could he reply.

Guru Ji then took out the bowl from behind the sadhu and said to him that when he could not find out where his things were, then how could he foretell someone's future!

Then Guru Nanak Dev Ji told the audience to believe in themselves and work hard. One's future lies in one's own hands and (s)he has the power to amend it through hard work and determination!
