Gandhiji's School
Gandhiji's School
In South Africa, Gandhiji had set up an ashram at Phoenix, where he started a school for children!
Gandhiji had his own teaching methodology. He did not like the examination system.
In his school, he wanted to teach the students the true knowledge—that knowledge which would improve both their minds and their hearts!
Gandhiji had his own way of judging students! All the students in the class were asked the same question. But often Gandhiji praised the student with low marks and scolded the one who had secured high marks!
This confused the children. When questioned on this unusual practice, Gandhiji one day explained that he never intended to try to show that Bibek is more clever than Gaurav. He did not give marks on that basis.
He wanted to see that how far each student had actually progressed and learned!
If a clever student competes with a stupid one and thinks high of himself then he is likely to grow dull!
He would become complacent thinking that he would surely do well and stop working hard!
On the other hand, a student who does not become overconfident, would surely work hard and succeed!
Gandhiji kept a close watch on the students who did well. And also saw that they still worked hard or not!
Gandhiji continually stressed this to his students, not to be complacent and to always work hard!
If a student was not very clever, but worked hard and did well, then Gandhiji used to praise him very much!
