Abandoned

Sunita was an intelligent and good looking girl. She had a dream to become a professor of Botany. She was the most loved kid of her father and shared all her thoughts and dreams with her father. She had competed her Masters in Botany before she got married to a rich guy Praveen. It was completely an arranged marriage and both of them had never met before their marriage. Surprisingly, even in the engagement ceremony, Praveen was not present and the would be mother-in-law made her would be daughter-in-law, Sunita to wear the engagement ring.

Finally, the wedding day arrived and Praveen came as a groom to Sunita's wedding. Sunita's father was a government employee and mother a government teacher. The groom had covered his face with the entire hangings and bead and his face was not visible. Sunita and her entire family and invited guests were eager to have a look of the so-called rich guy who was going to become the son-in-law of this family. The boy was brought to the arena where exchange of garlands, jaimala, was to happen.

Everybody was excited to see the first glimpse of the groom. Sunita's sisters were dressed beautifully and stood beside their sister Sunita with the tray of garlands and aarti. As soon as the groom lifted his face to garland Sunita, the whole wedding hall went to silence. Sunita was even shocked. Praveen was not a normal boy, he was a mentally retarded person and their rich family had cheated on Sunita and her family. The moment was too stressful. Sunita could not understand what she should do. But looking at her younger sisters who were also in their marriageable age, her pitiful father who had few years before retirement and was a heart patient, her mother who was not well, she just garlanded the groom Praveen. With her shattered dreams, she married Praveen and took farewell to start a new journey.

She reached her husband's place where her mother-in-law was waiting. There was even a reception party at the groom's place. Now the new life of Sunita was a disaster. Praveen was difficult to be managed as his behavior was not normal. They were sent to Mumbai to live their lives alone. The ambitious girl could understand nothing. There was no means of earning in Mumbai for Praveen so Sunita stepped out for job. She found a job of Professor in a government college on contract. Living was becoming harder day by day. Suddenly after twenty years of marriage, her mother-in-law called her son to her village and did not allow to go back. Sunita had spoiled her life for not taking a decision at right time and now she was ABANDONED at the age of fifty.
