It was again a same day at school. Krish was chased by his fellow classmates. They threw away his lunch-box, They called him names, he was taunted in every class of the day. And finally, the day ended with all possible color's of ink on his white shirt. Krish had stopped crying after few days, he was hurting but then it was his usual day at school. He was called lanky, dark-boy, ugly-monkey and what not.

He couldn't say this to his mother for whom he was the brightest and cutest kid in the world. He tried to hide it as much as possible from her and his father. They were very proud of him. He was the newly joined south Indian boy topping the brighter crowd of Delhi students. But they didn’t know about all the bullying he was going through.

Krish sighed with relief as finally the day was over. He was off the hook. He was walking back home, his mind floating everywhere on the streets of Delhi. He was fascinated by this city. People were far more confident and outgoing than in Chennai. Though the school was nowhere near nice to him, but he was fascinated by that bold city and its people.

He didn’t have friends in school. He already penned down on paper that he won't get any, as he was a black sheep in the whole white crowd. He was a lanky, dark skinned boy, who wouldn’t look good in the group of fair and strong built students. He already drawn his boundaries. Apparently, he didn't show much interest in befriending his school-mates.

He was walking leisurely, enjoying cool evening breeze and suddenly he heard someone calling his name. He looked around, suddenly a cute girl jumped on his side. “Hey Krish, scared already?” He was puzzled to see ‘The famous Sia Sinha’ talking to him in person. Sia was the grand-daughter of school -trustee. She was good looking, had maintained good grades through-out. Though she was the grand-daughter of a trustee, she wasn’t so much in that element. She was a girl who kept things to herself, she had only few friends. And not at all a drama-queen like she supposed to be.

“Hey Sia, what are you doing here?” Asked Krish looking surprised. “Hey dummy, I stay nearby. I always go by this route. What about you?” She asked.

“I too go by this route. My house is a bit far, but I like to walk. It’s nice!” Krish didn’t know how to move the conversation ahead. Also, he was unsure whether Sia would be really interested walking beside him. He just kept a safe distance between them, walking a bit ahead.

“Hey wait for me. Walk slowly, I am coming with you.” Sia declared. Krish stopped midway, not able to process what she was saying. She stepped closer to him and tapped on his backpack. “Okay. Now you can walk again!” With that a shy smile slipped from Krish’s lips. Sia laughed hard with that saying, “Someone is blushing!”

And that’s how their friendship started….. Days passed, Krish was still a victim of the bullying. Sia tried to stand for him. But that didn’t help, instead it added to his misery. Krish asked Sia to stay away from him in school. Sia was upset by Krish’s request. She was furious about the unkind behaviour of their fellow classmates with Krish. Unwillingly she agreed. He always stood tall against the bullying. When things went out of hands, he complained to head-master. It helped for a while but not for long.

Finally, things settled, the bullies lost interest! It had something to do with Sia’s hushhush about ongoing bullying in school to her grandpa. Krish excelled in school exams and sports too. He never tried to befriend his new classmates or making an impression. However, he found few true friends like Sia!

It was a regular evening of Krish and Sia’s routine. That day, she decided to take a detour to Krish’s route. They were chatting and making jokes. Suddenly a group of few kids passed by and Krish exclaimed, “Hey buggers, how are you? How was the day today?” Few kids from the group replied. “Think of the devil and devil is here! You are the biggest bugger Krish. Hasn’t that been clear in these days!” The group of kids were both girls and boys. Their hands were linked together. Few of the have hands on each other’s shoulders. It looked like they were enjoying their little chatter! Krish moved towards them and touched their hands, did some high-fives and did a group hug!

Sia was taken aback by Krish’s changed demeanor! She didn’t understand what to make out of the scene in front. A pang of jealousy infected her mind when Krish hugged the girls from the group. From Sia’s point of view, Krish had kept their friendship, way too much platonic. She could see the reason in front!

She was about to turn back on them when Krish called out her name. “Sia, hold on a second. Meet my friends! You always tease me about being a loner. See for yourself, I am having a whole school band here!” Sia didn’t have any intension to join them. But she never had seen Krish that happy. He was beaming with joy. She didn’t want to ruin the moment! She moved closer the group.

Just when she was about to present her sorry greetings, Krish took her to side. “Just shake their hands, firm. No clumsy business! I will introduce them one by one.”

‘Oh, now I need to be ceremonial with these so-called friends of Krish’ thought Sia.

But she obeyed. Within few moments the greetings were done. The group bid them cheerful good-byes, walking with their hands linked together.

“So? these are your secret friends! That’s why you aren’t anywhere interested in making friends at school…” Krish kept walking, smiling coolly. Sia kept going, “Many girlfriends too… Wow Krish! You are full of surprises!”

“Yeah, they were my only friends other than you and few from our school! And I am really fond of them…” Krish replied.

“I could see that. Group hugs and all.!” Sia said with a tone of sarcasm. Krish could sense something was off for that conversation. But he knew, what it might be.

“Did you notice them, Sia?” He asked her in his usual sincere voice.

“Yeah. What to notice about them? They are school going kids just like us! Of course, I felt them way too much clingy! They were cheesy, what's that hands in hands, shoulder by shoulder thing? It was embarrassing. It was like “Ye dosti hum nahi chhodenge” kind of thing!” Sia was critical on the feedback.

“Okay, they maybe. But these are the only few people, who accepted me when nobody does… These are my first friends in Delhi, even before you!” Krish said with a hint of hurt in his voice. He continued, “They accepted me, irrespective of my outsider status or my lanky legs or my dark complexion or my oily hairs!

They greeted me with open hands and accepted me with open hearts. They touched my soul. Gave me a hand when I needed the most.”

Sia didn’t have any clue how to proceed in that conversation. She realized that she was unkind to his friends. “Sorry Krish I didn’t intend to hurt you. Sorry for my mean remarks on your friends!” She apologized. She was almost on the verge of crying.

“No worries Sia. It’s fine. That won’t change their reputation though! And yes, they are a bit touchy feely! Sometimes over the top too. But those are the best I must tell you!” Krish seemed to be as his older self again. Sia sighed with relief.

She then she took a long breath and started,

“I am sorry, that I called names to your friend's names… I am sorry, I hurt your feelings… I am sorry, I was mean… I am sorry that our own school-mates were unkind to you… I am sorry that you had to deal with some idiots…” Sia repeated each sentence with honesty. Krish was surprised by the humility in his bold, care-free friends’ words.

And then she paused… Krish was waiting for some big words…

“And I am sorry that your mother applies way too much oil in your hair” with that they both laughed!

At the same time, Krish happy friends were about to cross the road. They were getting ready. Krish pointed at them and signaled Sia to watch. Each of the group member snatched a thing from their backpacks. Thrown it in the air and then they were ready to cross!

Sia was stunned by the happenings. She witnessed a beautiful sight. Each group-member held each other by one hand and their other hands were busy in navigating the white sticks on the road!

With that, those struggling drops of tears finally made their way through Krish’s eyes!
