Verity
Verity
Brick by brick I built those walls
Shedding sweat and dirt
Melting metal block by block
Climbing away from the hurt
Wind and storm couldn't break my shield
Nor could sword and spear
For his behind the wall all my dreams
And every last one of my fears
In front of it I stood tall
Seeming emotionless and cold
But behind the shield a war was waging
Because anyone could only be so bold
They told me to let down my shield
So the world could see who I was
Told me if anyone hurt me
They would give the gauze
I wouldn't give in
Though I was softening the edges
Because I had heard of tales
Of girls jumping off from ledges
After much persuasion I caved
And brought down the magnificent fort
Convinced that no ship would be stupid enough
To weigh anchor on this port
They came at me not with battle cries
Didn't commit a sudden crime
But came along slowly slowly
One by one at a time
They told me it was a good thing
To let your guard down
Stupid me, I believed them
And handed my kingdom's crown
And then one night the inevitable happened
A sword for my heart it came
And when the crimson was flowing through my fingers
They said my weak shield was to blame.
