The Watch in The Attic

The Watch in The Attic

2 mins
234

They had told her never to touch

The watch that lies in the attic

Of her ancestral house far from the city,

‘Cause they say it is dangerously erratic

Her family says that it is unpredictable

Nevertheless, she snuck in

She fiddled with its dials, and oh my!

She saw the whole world spin!!

She first thought if she was dizzy

But then she saw a familiar room,

But it couldn’t be!!

It was back at her home!!

She wondered if she had time travelled,

Which she had, as the day was of 5 years back.

She saw a kid playing happily on the table in front of her,

But then it fell hard on the floor with a smack!!

The kid cried loudly, as blood started oozing out of her knee,

A young man and woman came running.

Even though the cut was deep,

They calmed her down by constant funning.

She wondered why this couple was so familiar,

Along with these moments,

With a start, she realized that the child was her,

And those were her parents.

The world stopped spinning and she was back in the attic,

But her thoughts were still back there,

As finally she realized after all these years,

The fortune of having her parents' care.

They are the ones who showed her the world,

They are the ones who were with her all along,

Now that she saw that day 5 years back,

Now holding her tears back.... she couldn’t be that strong.

She let the tears streak her face,

As she wondered where they were,

After all she had come to hometown for their funeral,

As they alone had left her.

She had grown under her mom’s love and her dad’s protection,

But she hadn't valued their efforts and left home for her future

But she should have come back and spent time with them

As guilt formed in her heart like a wound without suture.

She had realized it too late

That parents were her only gods

They raise their children the best they can

And go against all the odds.

She finally knew why not approaching the watch

Was always considered ideal

It showed one’s most traumatic memories

And made one understand the dark reality.
