The Sacred Medicine Wheel

The Sacred Medicine Wheel

A circular loop with no beginning and no end to feeling,

Is an ancient sacred circle known as the Medicine Wheel?

An inner spiritual energy wheel representing healing,

Symbolic of peaceful interaction between each being.

A mirror within which everything is clearly reflected back,

Look into it to see your condition but courage does not lack.

It assists individuals to walk well in this life on earth,

Towards complete enlightenment from the moment of birth.

Ever evolving bringing forth real truth and new lessons,

To know how others feel you must walk in their moccasins.

Each being will stand on every spoke of this great wheel,

Thus only that what dwells in all hearts will he feel.

The Great Spirit or Wakan Tanka lies at its centre,

Surrounded by the elements of earth, air, fire and water.

East, South, West and North, caretakers of the universe,

Homage to each of the Four Winds, the wheel's anchors.

Deeper into the Medicine Wheel if you keenly see,

Southeast, South West, North West, Northeast shall be.

Each of these four Mid-Winds has been associated,

With one of the seasons and time of the day created.

East is characterised by illumination and the morning,

South stands for afternoon, emotions, fluidity and growing.

West represents introspection, conservation and evening,

North with the night, mind, knowledge, strength and healing.

Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, the four blessed seasons,

Each marks a stage of human growth, development and reason.

Childhood and growth are representative of East and Spring,

While of youth and puberty, the South and Summer sun does sing.

The colours of Autumn in the West glow in fulfilled maturity,

While the wisdom of later life is seen in North's winter's purity.

Each of the directions can be remembered eternally with a name,

Visionary(east), Warrior(south), Dreamer(west), Healer(North) remain.

Peacemaker, Nomad, Initiator and Firekeeper are some names more,

Of Mid-Winds in Southeast, Southwest, Northwest and Northeast four.

Representing the attributes of every being born in each season,

Associated with a stone, tree and colour are three birth totems.

These individuals hold the power to convey to the being strength,

During the crucial time of a challenge or test or then in stress.

Messages from Wakan Tanka are revealed in one's dreams,

Blessed with knowledge and power is 'Medicine supreme.

Brought to each being by animals or 'Messengers of Spirit',

They enrich our intellect and inner strength in us create.

There is no wrong or right way to build a Medicine Wheel,

Each individual makes it shall a different resonance feel.

Life, after-life, rebirth and honouring thus every stage,

Join my fellow beings, to the Great Spirit let us pay homage.
