The Child Inside
The Child Inside
You've been inside me for a few months now,
Growing, developing, moving,
I can only see you on a hospital screen -
And so, even when I don't like it much,
I go there anyway, just for a chance to see you
Again and again.
When we first found out about your existence,
I was expecting it, but -
Oh, you should've seen your father's face -
What a picture it was!
The only regret I had after that day
Was that I didn't think to take a photo to show you
When you were all grown up -
I'm sure you'd laugh and laugh,
Till you could no more!
Ever since then, you've been inside of me,
Growing, developing -
From a tiny seed to an almost full-grown baby -
I've seen every one of them.
But it was when you started moving inside me
That the real joy began -
And I finally realised that I was going to be a mother
And my husband your father -
Every time we felt you moving around,
It's been such a pleasure;
Even when it got painful,
I never once hated you for it.
And now, you're in your eighth month -
All grown up and almost done -
And you move so much,
I wonder if you're restless and trying to find a way out.
You think you're all happy and cosy inside,
Causing me constant discomfort -
You just wait and see -
When you come out into the world
I'll hug you tight and never let you go.
You've been inside me for a few months now,
Growing, developing, almost fully grown,
I can only see you on a hospital screen -
And so, even when I don't like it much,
I go there anyway, just for a chance to see you
Again and again.
