Promises: Too Good To Be True?

Promises: Too Good To Be True?

A cousin’s big Indian wedding,

set the stage,

the first time our innocent eyes met.

No one cared to know who we were,

or if we were old enough,

to drown our youth away at the bar.

Something about the stillness of your face,

the confidence of your stance,

set you apart from your friends,

with their not-so-charming laughs.

I couldn’t resist the comfort,

the vacant chair adjacent to yours promised,

as it enticed me to walk over.

My vodka tonic,

and your whisky sour cheered,

and so began a friendship,

a journey for years to come.

There wasn’t a coffee shop that we didn’t try,

thirty-eight cups later,

our conversations would still never die.

It wasn’t long after the fifty-sixth,

that we realized,

we were something special in each other’s lives.

If one was swamped with sorrow,

the other wiped away the tears,

so they could be felt and shared,

before they fell to the ground,

lonely and untouched.

If one was seen alone,

it was like a glass half-empty,

that could only be made full with the other’s company.

I vividly recall the starry sky,

the one we laid under that Diwali night.

We shared our first kiss,

as fireworks around us celebrated,

our promise to be together for eternity.

Five years,

and a thousand cups of coffee later,

I smiled at the chair opposite me,

soon to be filled by you,

and the big news you brought for me.

Your face stood out in the busy Mumbai crowd,

and made my heart flutter,

as my mind wished you could walk quicker.

You sat down,

sweaty and baffled,

and I knew right away,

something was awfully wrong.

“I told my parents about you today,

they had no idea that I wasn’t straight.

I know that we want each other,

now and forever,

but they don’t want us to last,

now or forever.

I have to do what they say and marry a girl,

for no one taught me,

how to choose between my family and my love.”

My heart shattered as it saw you leave,

my mind tried to cling on to every memory.

I will never forget that moment,

for it was then that I knew,

life made sure,

that some promises were too good to be true.
