One Day
One Day
One day,
When your paths cross again
Both of you might exchange
A smile, a handshake, an embrace,
Or all of three.
Hurried...awkward,
He will ask about your life
Without him in it,
All the while looking for traces
Of the gaping void,
Left behind by each, in each.
And at the end of those heart pounding minutes,
After uttering forced casual goodbyes,
Each will wish to steal a last glance from behind
But each will walk on the eyes levelled ahead,
For you both know
Looking back is of no use
Because turning back is no more an option.
And with those slow footsteps,
And the mind remembering the old laughter and tears,
And he will tell himself, like he told you
That he is happy, you look good
And much like you told him, you will tell yourself,
That you are happy for him.
But all those defences will be washed away,
When suddenly it will start to pour,
And in the end looking up to the skies,
You both will admit,
That you'd been happier before.
