WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
The question he couldn’t answer, even though he was experiencing it. 11-year-old Cory was one of the cool kids, popular and always surrounded. Good at day, but almost dead at dawn. He was one of the people who ached to wake up, ached for sunlight, ached for life.
Walking down the hallway at 1:02 AM, going to only-God-knows-where. To class? It certainly didn’t seem like it.
He saw a tall building with lights still switched on in it. He ruffled through his hair, “Hmm…seems pretty familiar, let’s check it out.” As he walked in, he felt a chill down his back, which stopped right over the edge of his pants. He ignored it and walked to a wall filled with bills, paper and graffiti art. An illuminated sign indicated that the building was where his father worked. FBI, ‘The FBI’ building. He walked in hoping to find his dad. Suddenly, the metal detector beeped louder than ever. A bellowing alarm went off in the background.
“Protocol… Emergency!!”, he heard voices coming down the corridor. He saw his father running down the hall. “Dad!! You don’t know how happy I am to see you right now.” Getting punched in the chest is a completely non-painful sensation. Impact and darkness. He was experiencing something quite the opposite. The last thing he felt was his Dad punch him away, a blast and then the essence of the night.
He suddenly felt himself falling through his dark memories. Facing his rejection, fears and stress. Suck in and wake up.
He woke up to his teacher, “Cory, CORY!! Are you done answering?!”
“Umm, I guess ma’am…”
His books were covered in saliva. His head was spinning. Oh! The answer hit him. When we all fall asleep, we go to where we want to. Through your day, fears, etc. Depends on our mood where our dreams take us. But, no, the actual answer which sums it all up:
to the back of our eyes.
