Three Generation of Women - TGW

TGW is an intergenerational novel that traces the lives of the three women spread over a century.

The book paints a cast of characters over a long time, unravels the family mysteries and complex relationships; unveil flaws and fears that are passed down from ancestors and eventually unravels the secrets held tight.

Starting in the heartland of Northern India in Gorakhpur, the lives of the different women take them to the historical city of Lucknow and finally the bustling and energetic financial capital, Mumbai.

Aruna Amla Devi is a child bride who grew up to become the powerful landlady and heiress to a well-known Bindlesh family. She and her husband, after an arranged marriage, share a loving and nurturing relationship. Amla Rani tight walks between her roles as the caregiver and the tough business woman that the controls the villages and farmlands they own.

Ambika Rani, her daughter, is married into an influential and a politically connected business family in Lucknow, the Chandra’s. She is unable to adjust in the cultural environment and gender divides, and wishes to return to her parents’ home with her new born daughter, Anandi. The Chandra’s cannot allow this and decide to stage and accident to kill them. The move is thwarted by Amla Rani but she has to send her daughter into hiding where Ambika lives a parallel life without her identity or her family.

Anandi grows up under the care of her grandparents, as an adopted child whom they love and support. Her ambitions take her across the world and into a live-in relationship with Bhaskar Arane. Things work well for them until a secret gift on her 50th birthday arrives. It makes her go back in time to uncover the secrets that were hidden for the last two generations and figure out who she really was, and the dark secrets of her parents’ lives.

Anandi unveils the past through diaries and letters and meeting people she can trace. She is drawn into a complex maze of intrigue, murder, fortunes and power as she pieces to together the past century. A mysterious rocking chair that the three women had swayed on, helps her juggle and decipher the story together, and eventually get the answers she was seeking.
