SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN

The most favored one is of course Christmas! Academic year over, it was the most joyous season. Back then when the Britishers had still not left India, the club held a big Christmas party for the children.

Mr. Moon, a Britisher, with a round face, of huge frame and with a tummy to match, dressed as Santa Claus, appeared in a sled drawn by a reindeer, to the lyrics of "Santa Claus is coming to town", as we stood in awe watching him carry a huge bag flung over his shoulder, walking into the club auditorium stage.

Every child received a gift, colorfully wrapped with a name sticker. He called out the names as we walked up to him to receive our gifts. Once this ceremony was over, we dug into the Christmas treats spread on the buffet table...sandwiches, scones, pastries, plum cakes with almond frosting, cookies, chocolates, added to which, each one of us got a party hat, a whistle and a bag full of candies. No one minded the noise decibels rising on that day. One day when parents didn't insist on a curfew hour. The party went on till we kids were exhausted, nodding off on our chairs.

Carol singing was part of the event. Mrs. Hill a Scottish lady sat at the piano striking the black and white keys, while we sang full-throated "Jingle Bells...jingle bells..jingle all the way". A universal festival, not restricted to Christians alone.

The hangover of Christmas lasted more than a week after it was over. And Christmas celebrations still feature in our lives, though we have aged like plum cakes.
