The next day after he left, I waited for a call. I kept checking my phone for a text, he did not have internet and he didn't have wifi. When in Rome do as Romans do, but it'll take you time to follow them too. So that's what it took, the adjustments took TIME. I spent 60 rupees that morning over the phone mindlessly listening to a lady speak an esoteric language which didn't make sense to me. But I still listened carefully, expecting any moment the automated lady on the other end would be cut by the sweetest hello after a long long time. But it didn't happen. I used to open my eyes to a good morning text flashing on my screen, that day I opened my eyes to my home screen displaying the clock of two countries. My stomach was twisting inside, thinking this is not it. I want to get back to the old routine things.

I was irritated the whole day, instead of the person suffering jet lag being the same. The battery kept draining because the wifi tab on my phone was constantly on and the expectation button in my heart was glowing green since the morning. Nothing could shut these down except for a text. THE text I was waiting for. I slipped into his lower thinking of all the times he'd worn it, and started working on things that needed me to bolster all the strength and move. Prior to this I was stuffed in the blankets like a burrito, wide awake, praying, he'd somehow get an open wifi and text me. Some-effing-how. It took me 60 bucks, three on-site repeat automated audios of the lady and a lot of time to realize that the person might have been sleeping. Distance! It does that, you cannot normally call a person and expect they'd pick up like they used to in India. You cannot text and expect a text at the very next instant because apart from jet lags, there are many other lags intervening all the things, that were going smooth and fine in your country. The obstinate kid in me, re-tried calling not expecting the phone to be picked up. Finally there was a click and somebody picked up the phone, this time it wasn't the lady, it was a man in the sexiest sleepy voice ever. A man I loved.
