Puppy Love

Puppy Love

Our eyes locked for a few seconds, and it seemed I was transported to heaven. And every day furtive looks were exchanged, without a word being said. How could he? Travelling in the same school bus, girls and boys seated separately, it was considered improper to communicate with the boys and vice versa.

Yes..we abided by the rules strictly, girls talking to girls, and boys with boys.

Then one day magic happened. I slipped and fell while getting off the school bus. The boy with blue eyes rushed to pick me up, holding me for some time, that went unnoticed by the prying eyes. It was then he slipped into my bruised hands, a note which read "Meet me in the Club this evening at 5". I nodded in agreement, totally stumped. That was the moment I knew I was in love with David.

Now you may call it 'puppy love' or whatever, as I was thirteen going on fourteen, and David just turned sixteen. The fluttering on heart, knees turning to jelly, total disinterest in studies, daydreaming...are they not all symptomatic of being in love?

At sixty plus, I still laugh over the first time I fell in love, and was heartbroken for days when he left for Australia soon after graduating. And there ended the love story of a girl in pigtails.
