Chapter 1

Superstar

Alex woke up like any other day. They looked at the bed across the room. It was decorated with posters and was well made. In front of it was a television on a cabinet possessing various movies and games. There was a table covered with medals and trophies.

Then they had a look on their side of the room. It was completely barren. In a corner lied Alex’s five most prized possessions. It comprised a pet mouse cage with a faded label ‘Gary’ and two photographs one of his family and the other of his class.

He walked down to the living room where he bid his mother a good morning. “Aren’t you excited? Your elder brother is going to come to visit us for a vacation from a college in a month from now.” Alex nodded.

They got ready for school. Their mother said, “Today you will be doing your science projects in class in a group, right? I know you are rather aloof but try to have fun making friends.” Alex sighed and nodded. Their mother smiled at them.

“You are just in time Alex. We were about to start forming groups. Find people whom you are comfortable with.” Said the teacher going back to her phone.

Alex walked around seeking for someone who would let him in his group. The groups were supposed to be three. Everyone present there had already made their groups. So they went to the teacher for help. “Well, you will just have to work with the last two haven’t come here yet. No choice for you then sadly.” Alex sighed and nodded.

Then came the last two students. Laura the quiet kid and Rodney the class jock. “You three will have to work together.” Said the teacher. “Okay” stammered Laura. “Let’s have fun,” said Rodney.

“Now that the groups have been made come pick up chits from this bowl to see your topics for the project.” instructed the teacher.

After getting the topics they started dividing the work. “What kind of talents do you have that could help us? Some great artistic skills co

uld be helpful.” Alex points at Laura. “What? No. I am not that good. I just like to draw.” “We are kind of in a desperate situation here. Can you show me your older works?” Laura pulls out a sketchbook filled with amazing work. “It’s bad, isn’t it?” she said hiding her face on the verge of crying. “Quite the contrary actually. It is some top-notch quality material. Why don’t you focus on the decorations till Alex and gather info? Let’s go to the library and do it. Sounds cool to you?” Laura agrees with him, her eyes glowing. Alex nods.

In the library, while Rodney and Alex were looking for some books, Rodney pointed at Laura and said to Alex,” I’d like to thank you for Laura. She seems so happy for helping us by doing something she loves. It’s cute, isn’t it?” Alex nodded. “A man of few words I see.” laughed Rodney.

“We are almost done. We did a better job than expected. I had a ton of fun. We should hang out more often.” said Rodney. Laura replied, her eyes shining like never before, “Yes. I’d love to.”

The teacher was astounded by the amazing project the three had produced.” The content is rather average but its beauty more than makes up for it” said the teacher. “All credit goes to Laura then”, claimed Rodney. “Then let’s have a huge round of applause for Laura.” The applause echoed in the class. Alex smirked.

As the class was over aura approached Alex, speaking fluently like never before, “Thanks Alex. If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t have had the best day of my life. I feel like a star. A superstar today.” Alex smirked. She hopped away a tad creeped out by his smirk which she shook off almost instantly.

At home, their mother asked how their project faired out. She was extremely elated to hear that their group had made one of the best ones. She hugged Alex and said, “I can’t express how happy I am. Let’s have an ice-cream night tonight.” Alex smiled.

Before going to sleep, Alex looked at his fourth most prized possession and smirked remembering all he heard that day. “No choice for you.” “It’s cute, isn’t it?” “You are aloof” “I feel like a star. A superstar” He then bid it a good night.
