What about people who need pain medicine?

So this week, I've been writing about addiction and the opioid addiction we are having in this country. The pharmaceutical companies pushed these pills like your corner dealers, the doctors jumped in because they were receiving huge kickbacks, and the country got hooked. Then, and only then, when the class action lawsuits came out, everyone was singing a different tune.

All of a sudden, doctors couldn't write these millions of prescriptions. You now need to go to a pain clinic to get these drugs. Yes, this helped, but it also took this from one extreme to another about pain.

While speaking to a dear friend of mine who was an ER nurse for 25 years, she saw firsthand what these addictions were doing to people. Not the typical drug addicts but white-collar people, young people, and all kinds of people were coming into her hospital trying to do anything for these pills. She has witnessed hundreds of overdoses and people dying from this, and so yes, she became a little jaded.

When a few years ago she developed a serious and painful disease, she realized that many people are truly in pain and need these drugs just to get through the day. She explained that now, on the other end of the stick, she is treated like a drug addict. Even though she is only supplied with a 30-day prescription, one pill a day. She must go for drug tests. She has to go see a pain management doctor and must bring her diagnosis with her to get this.

I remember two years ago I had surgery on my wrist, and they had to put 2 screws into it. When I came home from surgery, they gave me nothing for the pain. When I called the doctor, the nurse said to have something cool like fruit punch, think happy thoughts. I was like bitch, I'm in pain. I'm not asking for 30 pills, just a few to get through the first few days. But no, I had to suffer it out. I was being punished because of the pharmaceutical companies and the doctors who did this.

What about people with cancer, who are dying or have diseases that are so painful they can't get out of bed some days? Well too bad, they will treat them like drug addicts as well. They are paying for the sins of these money-grubbing pharmaceutical companies and doctors who did this to the nation.

So today my friends, this is the world we live in. A world who only cares about money and will not change until they get caught. A world who will go from one extreme to another when their pockets are being gone after. Screw all the people who really need this pain medication, they weren't the ones making them all the money.

We need a change. We need to hold those responsible for what they did and not blame the country for addiction when they were giving pills out like candy and even having a stuffed animal as their mascot. But only you can be that change when the election comes.

Be that change.
