Marriages, souls of Indian tradition, whenever approach in Indian families, preparations start way back before. But what would happen if the pious and auspicious occasion of a marriage is converted into a nightmare?

Here, comes a story from my grandfather's garland of memories based on this outline. My grandfather always tells me anecdotes, articles, stories or any other piece of literature that could be an inspirational source for me and could enhance my thoughts.

Around thirty years ago, my grandfather's most beloved sister's marriage had been fixed. Guests had arrived and the whole house echoed with giggles and laughs.

Soon, the final day came; my grandpa's sister 'Vidya Devi' was on cloud nine as it was the most important day of her life. Vidya means 'Goddess of studies but she had no connection with studies as she had never seen school in her whole life. And how could anything be more humorous, weird and absurd than this. She was the youngest and dearest to all. The whole family tried its level best to make her marriage a grand and magnificent event. They bought expensive articles for the purpose of pomp and show. Even a makeup artist, Kamla was hired for her.

Everyone, was mesmerized to see Vidya Devi in her wedding costume and jewellery. Maximum ladies were feeling jealous. Everything was going very well and the guests were impressed by the management of the ceremony.

Then suddenly my grandpa noticed that his sister's one earring was missing. He discussed it with his sister and she was stunned when she found it to be true. He also advised her not to panic and hesitate and also warned her not to mention it in front of anyone as it would unnecessarily create a chaos.

He tried to find a way to resolve this problem. Suddenly, a brilliant idea flashed through his mind. He went to the videographer who had been hired for the function and narrated the whole incident to him. He asked if he had accidentally recorded the robbery of the jewellery piece taking place. They checked several videos if there was any evidence in his camera. The housemaid was my grandpa's first suspect. Finally, they found a video in which Kamla, the beautician, was simultaneously touching Vidya's jewellery while arranging her veil and eventually stole the earring.

My grandpa and the videographer devised a plan to catch her red handed. They asked Vidya Devi to replace her set with another one. The plan was executed in the same way as they had expected. Vidya called Kamla to arrange her veil once again. Grandpa and videographer hid behind the curtain. When she made an attempt to steal another jewellery article, they caught hold of her and enquired her about what she was doing. They demanded her to speak the truth.

She had no option to escape so she confessed. Grandpa instructed the videographer to call the police but Kamla fell upon her knees and begged them not to do so. She returned the gold earring that she had stolen. They released her and warned her not to steal anything again in life.

Thus, the problem was solved without any chaos as my grandpa had handled the whole situation very wisely. His sister was on top of the world as she got her earring back but she learnt a life lesson that one should handle expensive materialistic things with care to avoid such mishaps.

"Pencils have erasers, but mishaps don't. Be alert, be smart and be safe."
