Monsters Heart

Veena had changed. Sometimes she could hardly recognise the person staring back at her in the mirror. The dull pale face, the dark shadows under her swollen eyes hardly resembled the happy go lucky pretty girl she used to be. Each and every moment felt so heavy, so unbearable , almost like she was dragging herself to go through the motions. More dead than alive.

She couldn't even understand where it had gone all wrong. Each and every day she would spend hours thinking about her mistake and how she could correct it. But the situation was growing worse day by day.

The environment in the classroom was so stifling. Nobody talked to her. She was treated like a pariah. Her numerous attempts to talk to her classmates had been ignored almost as if she didn't exist. Now though that invisibility was her refuge because it was worse when they did pay attention to her.Everytime recess came she dreaded the jokes, mocking words said loud enough for everyone to hear, the jeering laughter till she burst into pitiful wails. As she cried she could see the gleeful cruel expressions of her tormentors. It crippled her.

At home front too everything had been too hectic. Both of her parents were working long hours and any spare time they had they were focusing on preparing her elder brother Vivek for the science Olympiad. On several occasions she had gathered her courage and wanted to tell them the truth but found herself sidelined. Her parents were so focused on her brother and making him a success.

Her brother was a certified genius born to a family with limited means. They weren't poor but they weren't rich either. Just an average middle class family. But her brother's capabilities far exceeded the opportunity that his family could create for him to showcase his genius. And she could feel her parents guilt in not being able to provide her brother with the right opportunity and her brother's frustration with the whole family.

Their family life revolved around her brother. He was the center of the universe. There had been occasions when she felt that her role in the family was to be the joker and maintain that balance. And she didn't mind really because while it was a fact that her parents were very proud of her brother, they loved her wholeheartedly.

They loved her so much, enjoyed her jokes, chatter etc . Of Course there had been times when she found herself being compared to her brother in terms of academic performance . But she never questioned their love. Now she couldn't help but wonder if she was so loved so much then why had nobody in her family found out about her plight.

The loud shrill bell rang startling her and bringing her back to the present. Her maths class has just ended, signalling the start of recess . Her heart dropped. She could already feel the stares and joy of her tormentors as her teacher gathered her material and made her way out. She wanted to run but found herself frozen. Sweat gathered at the base of her neck. It was now or never. She had to make her move and escape the hellish place. But when she looked up her teacher was already gone. The last small morsel of hope she had was gone.
