Lucy Edwin

Edwin. Lucy Edwin. Teacher in Regent High School. She is the type of person whom we all would have met at least once in our life. She is very unlucky. Once, she ended up eating spoiled food which was to be thrown in the dustbin and instead threw the good food in the bin. Even if the worst situations arose in front of her, she never lost hope that one day, she would become a computer engineer. That was her ambition in 5^th grade.

She lost hope that no one would support her with this decision when she lost her parents. She lost them fifteen years ago. But, she still doesn’t know if they are alive. Her parents had a last-minute business trip to complete. They said they would arrive the next day. But she never saw them again. Her elder brother, Larry Edwin, suffered very hard to bring her up. She would always think,” Was I so bad that mom and dad wanted to punish me by never seeing my face again? If so, then why does Larry have to suffer for my mistake?”

She and Larry loved each other dearly. They used to care deeply for each other. But bad luck decided to strike once more. Larry had extreme pain in his stomach one afternoon. He pretended it was only cramped and that he would be fine after going to the doctor. He lied. He had got a rare blood disease which was the reason for his cramps. It was almost impossible to cure. Lucy wanted to help him, so decided to go to work. But Larry said,” I have only a few more weeks left. You have a lifetime. Study hard. Make me proud, my sweet sister”. Lucy had an important exam coming that week and she decided to keep her promise. She studied hard and wrote the exam well. She got her results after three days. She got a perfect mark, but Larry wasn’t alive to see it. This deep hurter, as she lost everyone she truly loved.

And so did she lose her ambition which was her life four years back. She took mathematics and became a teacher. Her students were very friendly and understood her grief. They didn’t console her when she cried in front of the class as they knew that she would only cry more. She taught Spanish as that was her mother-tongue until Larry died. After he died, she learned to speak English fluently and settled in London. As she was born and brought up in Mexico, she could read and write Spanish very well.

One day, when she was walking up the street to the entrance of her house, she felt as if someone was following her. She felt that she shouldn’t give her house away, and continued walking past her house. After a few steps, she stopped and turned. She saw an old woman, weeping, as she was following her. Lucy, knowing grief, went near the lady and asked her what was troubling her. The woman, behind her tears, whispered in a muffled voice,” My name is Andy, and my husband is trying to keep up with me.” Lucy’s heart froze as she heard these words. She just wanted to confirm if her suspicions were true. She slowly asked,” Is your husband’s name Edwin?” the lady silently nodded as Lucy started weeping in her mother’s arms…
