CHAPTER 1: TROUBLE BEGINS

Evans was a student at a nearby University. He was an interesting, intelligent and flexible person. He however had few friends because he was poor. The friends that he had, saw his potential and faithfulness --- they loved him because of that.

He had a crush on a young and beautiful lady, Emily. His crush for her quickly turned into love. He loved her dearly that he was willing to do anything to impress her. The only thing that was between them was, class. Emily was a rich girl and loved luxury things while Evans was a poor guy and had little to offer. All the boys that dated Emily ran away because she used to ask for things that they could not afford.

Even though Evans was poor, he was a hard worker. He wanted to impress Emily so he went to look for a job.

When morning came, Evans quickly wore his best attire. He wore a white long sleeved shirt and a black necktie, a black trousers and black shoes. He looked amazing and superior. At a distance, one could conclude that he was a manager meanwhile he's just a guy looking for a job.

When he was walking, he had both his hands in the pocket and walked majestically. Every person that saw him coming his or her way, stepped aside to give him way.

He started looking out for any flayers related to a job he could do. A job that could give him a fair salary to help him impress Emily.

It seemed as if it was his lucky day. He finally found a flayer. The flayer read:

We are looking for people to fill in the vacant positions:

Cleaner

Sue Chef

Bar Attendant

If you are interested, visit FOOD RESTAURANT for interviews.

_________________________________________________

Just about ten meters away from where he found the flayer, he found the restaurant. He was so excited. He then fixed himself up and entered the restaurant. The restaurant looked quite small on the outside but on the inside, it was bigger and brighter.

From entrance straight to the bar it was about ten meters. On the left and right sides were the tables and chairs, they were in a round-like structure. The kitchen was behind the bar and close to the Manager's office.

The restaurant was empty and quiet. Evans knew that someone was there, because the Office was wide open. He walked closer to the office, he heard a voice command, " Come in."

Evans almost got a heart attack because the voice was loud, and because the restaurant was empty, there was an echo that followed. He entered quietly and carefully.

The man put down the papers, looked at Evans and asked, "Are you here for the job?"

Evans had a huge smile on his face and replied, "Yes sir!"

"Pull out a chair and take a sit," instructed the man.

After several minutes of waiting, the man finally finished his work. He packed documents in different drawers.

The man then spoke, "I'm the Manager, Mr Walker. We have only one slot open"

   "Which is?"

"Cleaner . Unfortunately, no one wants this position. I have a feeling you won't want it as well ----"

   "I'll take it," interrupted Evans

"What?" Mr Walker asked in shock.

   "I'll take it," confirmed Evans.

   "Okay. That's good."

"So what's the salary?" Evans asked.

"K2,000 per month. We are open everyday from 18:00 hrs to 21:00hrs."

"I'll take it," for the third time.

Mr Walker stood up and said, "Congratulations! What's your name by the way?" He asked.

   "I'm Evans."

   "Congratulations Evans," they shook hands.

"When do i start?" Evans asked.

"Next week," concluded Mr Walker. When they finished, Evans went home excited. He had completed the first phase of his plan.

After several pay checks later, he decided to spend the money on Emily.

While at the University, Evans decided to go and ask Emily to be his girlfriend before someone else takes the chance. He was very confident and fearless. He found Emily in class with her friends. They were gossiping and laughing. He got closer to them and called Emily.

She sighed and stood up unwillingly. Evans and Emily went outside the classroom.

"What do you want?" Emily asked.

"I want to ask you something," he replied.

   "Go ahead."

"I really like you Emily, I have been holding myself back. But now I'm ready."

   "Okay"

   "Would you be my girlfriend?"

Emily looked at Evans and started laughing loudly. She went inside the classroom and summoned her friends. They quickly came out.

She updated her friends, "Get this, Evans wants me to be his girlfriend."

When Emily finished telling her friends what Evans said, they started laughing. Emily then looked at Evans, his face was very serious. She stopped laughing and said, "Oh. You are serious."

He quickly responded, "Yes I am."

Emily asked, "What are you going to give me in return of my love and time?"

Evans replied, "I will give you anything that you want. From stone to cloth.

After Emily heard this, she was delighted. She then said, "Yes."

And it happened that Evans and Emily started dating. Evan's friends warned him about Emily. They said that she was not good for him, and that she only wanted money and luxury things. But whenever his friends warned him about Emily, he would tell them that they were only jealous because he was the only one dating the cutest girl at the University. Emily was indeed a pretty girl. She smiled like an angel, her hair was heart taking. She was wonderful.

Two weeks later, Emily told Evans that she wanted a necklace. Because Evans loved Emily, he quickly responded that he would buy her the best necklace in town.

On a slow Sunday, Evans went in town. He wanted to buy Emily the best and most expensive necklace in town. He walked in a jewellery store. Evans started looking at the beautiful jewelleries in glass tables. While looking for the best necklace, a certain necklace caught his eye. It had three blue artificial diamonds in the front and a gold chain. It was called 'Blue Mermaid Necklace' because of the way it was made. It was sparkling. Evans knew that it was the best necklace because it was the most expensive. The necklace costed K35,000. It didn't matter to Evans for as long as Emily was happy. So he went ahead and bought it.

Evans waited until Monday to give Emily the necklace. He looked for her. He found her in the classroom he found her the last time he was looked for her. This time the class was full of people, except, the lecture was not in class. Again, Emily was with her two best friends, Natasha and Lisa. As usual they were gossiping and laughing.

Because Evans had bought the best necklace, he wanted to show off. He walked up to her and pulled the necklace out of the gift bag.

     Alot of students exclaimed, "Wow!"

He handed the necklace to Emily. She looked at it with a frown face.

She complained, "Of all the necklaces you can buy, you went and bought me an old fashioned necklace. Even my sisters could not wear such an old necklace," she continued, "I thought you said you loved me."

Evans was hurt by the words she said. he tried to reason with her, "Yes I do. But this is all I could afford. And by the way, this is the most expensive necklace in town."

She advised him, "Evans if you want me, you have to pull up your socks" She then throw the necklace away. Everyone in the classroom laughed at Evans. He picked it up and left because it was time for him to go to work. As he was walking he continued thinking of the words Emily said. He was hurt.

CHAPTER 2: THE NEW LADY

When he arrived at the restaurant, he was still deep in his thoughts. He kept asking himself why Emily embarrassed him in front of everyone in class. He thought he had left his problems behind only to find another one.

As he opened the door, he saw a lady cleaning the tables. She was very pretty, a bit light in complexion. She had made a pony tail with her hair. She had boots all the way to her knees. She wore a nice blue shirt and a jean skirt. She looked like she was enjoying what she was doing.

He walked up to her as if he wanted to stop a thief.

"Who are you?" Evans asked the lady.

She turned around slowly and looked directly into Evans' eyes and replied, "You are late, Evans."

Evans was confused, he thought to himself, "How does this lady know my name." He stared at her for some seconds and asked aloud, "How do you know my name? And why are you doing my work?" He then walked closer to her.

She sighed and put down the cleaning utensils and started talking to him.

She said in a simple tone, "I'm Kimberly, the supervisor. I was on leave for several months, and now I'm back. I was doing your work because the C.E.O of this restaurant will be here. He likes to find his restaurants nice and tidy. But when he comes and finds that this place is not clean," she paused for two seconds and continued, "He will fire you on the spot. That I assure you," She then got the utensils and continued, "So I'm just helping you."

He quickly apologized,” Please forgive my behaviour I promise next time I'll be on time."

He took few steps backwards to show respect. He then reached into his pocket to pull out his time card when the Blue Mermaid Necklace fell out of his pocket. He was about to pick it up when Kimberly saw it.

She was filled with love, "Wow! Is that the Blue Mermaid Necklace? "

     He agreed, "Yes it is.

She praised, “It is very beautiful."

He asked her politely, "You actually think it's beautiful, Miss Supervisor?"

She giggled and said, "Yes. I actually had one. I love the way it sparkles."

Evans then had a thought, "If she says that it is beautiful, then why did Emily throw it away?" It was clear that Evans was lost in his thoughts, because he was using the necklace as the key. Kimberly laughed then Evans flinched out of his thoughts.

Kimberly then curiously asked Evans, "Who is it for?"

He replied, "Nothing," he continued, "Please excuse me. I have to clean the Kitchen,"

Kimberly updated, "I cleaned the entire restaurant, the only thing left is to throw out the trash."

Evans stopped walking and replied, " Then I'll go and throw out the trash." He went to the kitchen, and did what he was supposed to do. To throw out the trash.

Few hours later Mr. Franklin the C.E.O of the Food Restaurants came through the drive way with an expensive car. All the employees knew that he was there for business. They quickly went to their respective stations and waited for him to enter. When he walked in, the weather changed from warm to cold. He shoved the car keys into his right pocket. He wore an expensive suit, it was very intimidating. He started going round inspecting the restaurant. When walked in the kitchen, he found some burnt food.

Mr. Franklin demanded, "Who is in charge of cooking?"

The chef quickly replied, "I am, Sir."

He asked in a more scary tone, "Are you not aware of your position?"

The chef replied, " I'm aware," he continued, " I only went out to get certain things. I'm sorry, this won't happen again."

Mr. Franklin confirmed, " You are right. It won't happen again, because you won't be here to let it happen."

The chef asked, " Are you firing me, Sir?"

"No, I'm promoting you. From a chef to a nothing," replied Mr. Franklin.

The cook packed up his things and left the restaurant. Everyone was now afraid of loosing their job. They prayed that Mr Franklin wouldn't find any fault in them.

Mr. Franklin continued his inspection in the dinning area. He then called the supervisor.

He told her, "Make sure that everything is in place. Everyone should do their job. If anyone comes late or does something stupid, don't hesitate to contact me. They will be fired instantly. "

Kimberly looked at Evans and replied, "Alright, Sir." Evans got the frightened.

Mr. Franklin was however pleased with the work the stuff was doing. And mostly because no customer complained. He was delighted. He went into the manager's office to talk to him.

It was now quitting time for the "Food Restaurants" employees. The customers with cars drove home while the ones without cars walked home. Mr. Walker also packed up his things and said his farewells, he left in his fancy car.

All the employees went home leaving Kimberly and Evans behind.

It was very dark outside that Evans used a flashlight to light up his way. He used a flashlight because he was not in town. There were countable streetlights along the roadside where he was walking.

As he walked for several meters, Kimberly ran after him. He was walking like an elephant, slow but taking big steps. It was almost impossible for Kimberly to reach to him. She tried calling out to him but with no results.

When she finally caught up with him; she tapped on his right shoulder. Evans was seriously startled by her approach. She was panting silently.

When Kimberly saw that Evans was startled, she apologized, "Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you," she then giggled innocently.

    "It's ok."

Kimberly asked sweetly, "So how are you doing?"

    "I'm fine Miss," he replied.

Kimberly quickly stopped Evans by holding his hand, snatched his flashlight and pointed it at his face.

She asked Evans with a frown face, "Do you want me to slap you, Evans?" Evans was confused by the question he was asked. Kimberly then continued in a more loving tone. " I'm only your supervisor when we are at work. And for as far as I'm concerned this is not work, is it?"

"No it's not. Sorry Kimberly," he apologized.

"That's more like it," she smiled as she removed the light from his face and pointed it in the direction they were walking so that they could see where they were going.

"How far is your place?" Kimberly asked.

"It's not very far," he replied.

"Tell me a bit about yourself Evans."

"What can I say? I'm a guy who works at Food Restaurants, I go at Nickel University. I'm currently studying civil engineering. I'm in my third year. Next year I'll be graduating."

"That is good. Unfortunately for me I dropped out of college. My father was very sick so I had to take care of him. And that is how I got the job here."

"You stay with your family?" Evans asked Kimberly.

"My dad and my sister, Charlotte, are my family now. My mother passed away some years back. We are just the three of us," She asked," What about you, do you stay with your family?"

"No. Actually I'm a bachelor. I left my parents some years back. My Uncle promised me a job as soon as I graduate."

"I must say, you are very lucky Evans," they both had a friendly laugh.

Kimberly and Evans continued their conversation for about two hours. Their conversation was so deep that they did not notice how much time had passed. When they both realized how much time passed, Evans very already 120 meters away from his house.

Evans said, “Kimberly I have passed my house by many meters," he then asked, "Why didn't you tell?"

"You did not tell me where you live. How was I supposed to know?" Then Kimberly laughed at him. She gave the flashlight back to Evans and said her farewells.

CHAPTER 3: THE PARK

On a Saturday morning, Evans decided to visit Emily since they had no classes. He made sure that he wore his nice clothes. He also passed through a shopping complex and bought a nice black expensive wrist watch for Emily. He hoped that she would like it because it costed K 3,000. 'Such an expensive watch for such a beautiful lady," he thought.

When he arrived at Emily's house, he knocked on the door but no one answered. It is because Emily and her parents were not home.

Evans had no other option but to wait for her at the veranda. Emily lived in a big house. Several cars were parked in the front of the house. They were expensive cars.

Evans sat down and leaned against the wall. The air was so fresh, the sun was shining and the wind was blowing smoothly. Because of the beautiful environment and smooth weather, Evans slept. He was very peaceful and calm.

At exactly 4pm, Emily and her parents drove in through the driveway. He heard the car pulling up so he woke up quickly and fixed himself up. He then stood up straight like a soldier

Emily's parents got out of the car. As they were walking in the house, they saw and greeted Evans, "How are you doing?"

"Fine, thank you for asking," he replied.

Emily also got out and walked up to Evans. Emily wore her nice clothes. They had gone to eat lunch at an expensive restaurant located in town. She looked very beautiful. She wore her makeup and plaited her hair.

Emily curiously asked Evans, "Hi, so what did you bring for me?"

Evans thought to himself, "I was here from morning. The best thing you could do is greet me." He was upset because Emily did not even bother to greet him.

He ignored her behaviour and said, "I hope you like it," he reached into his pocket and pulled out the wrist watch.

When Emily it, she was very excited, "Awww, is this for me? You shouldn't have."

Evans was happy to see that Emily was happy. He knew that their relationship was now going great. Everything now seemed normal and heavenly. Her smile melted his heart. He even forgot her earlier bad behaviour.

Just when he thought everything was fine, Emily then asked him in a sweet voice, "So darling, when are you taking me out?"

   "Very soon." he assured her.

Then Emily finally asked the question Evans has been waiting, "So how are you?" It took Evans an expensive wrist watch to get Emily to greet him.

They went inside and started a conversation. The majority of the conversation was concentrated on the things that Emily wanted Evans to buy for her. She talked about different things like, clothes, necklaces, makeup and dinner dates.

Evans did not pay much attention to her suggestions. He wanted their relationship to based on simple terms. He wanted to spend more quiet time alone with Emily. He suddenly came up with an idea.

As Emily was still talking, Evans interrupted and made a suggestion, "Emily, I want us to go to a quiet place. In the Park perhaps."

Emily was disgusted, she yelled, "What! Are you kidding me? I can't be seen there. It is just too dirty. "

Evans was hurt to hear Emily's reply. He kept quiet and listened to Emily suggestions. Which were mostly benefitting. It was getting late, he could see the sun setting through the open window. He quickly said his farewells and left.

As morning came, Evans was all ready to start the day. He made himself a cup of coffee while listening to the morning news. He lived in a two roomed apartment but he made it seem like he lived in a mansion. He was happy with what he had. He actually forgot about the visit to Emily's house or maybe he chose to forget. He made the best out of his morning. He jumped in his living room to study.

After studying for about three hours he wanted to refresh his memory. He wanted to walk through the park because it calms and refreshes his mind. It was the same park that Emily had called dirty the previous day he visited her.

When he reached the park, he was amazed to find only few people present. As it is calming and relaxing for him to have few people present at a park than having a alot of people, each doing different activities.

He walked over to a bench and sat down quietly and peacefully. The fresh air was so good. He quickly fell deep into his thoughts. Most of the times, Evans would forget everything when he starts thinking. He would lose focus of what is happening around him. One of his friends once sat down in front of him when he was deep in his thoughts but Evans didn't notice him. He was advised to quit thinking so much because it was dangerous for him. Whenever he was advised, Evans would reply, "I find peace in my thoughts." And every time his friends would reply, "One day you will find death in your thoughts."

One thought crossed his mind, "Why did Emily call this place dirty?" If she finds it dirty, then what do these people find in it? Do they see the same thing?" Then suddenly, Evans, was touched on the shoulder from behind. He quickly flinched out of his deep thoughts and turned to see who disturbed his peaceful wonder. Evans was surprised when he turned.

He saw Kimberly standing behind him. She was wearing a summer hat and a simple summer dress with pink flip-flops. She carried a brown hand bag in her left hand. She looked very pretty.

     "Hi Evans"

     "Hi Kim," he replied.

"Do you mind if I sit here with you?" she asked politely.

"Please make yourself comfortable," he replied with a smile.

Delightedly she sat down next to Evans.

"Nice weather we are having," Kimberly said with a smile on her face.

     "Yes it is," Evans agreed.

"So how are you today?" she greeted Evans.

"I am fine," he replied. Though he said he was fine, his face and body language never marched his reply. This made Kimberley confused. She asked him hoping that he would be open, "What's wrong?"

      "It's nothing," he replied.

She tried cheering him up by saying, "You know what I don't understand you. You act very weird. Last time you didn't answer my question, when I asked a question you replied ----- Nothing. Now I'm asking you a simple question, you replied ----- Nothing. Your name shouldn't be Evans but ---- Nothing," they both laughed. Kimberly seemed to have brought his morning spirit back. He was smiling and laughing again.

After they talked for a while, they started walking through the Park together. The sound of birds chirping and few people talking was amazing. The sky was clear and the sun was above them, the wind was shaking the trees gently from left to right and from right to left.

They walked in a direction of a lake. They saw some boys and girls playing in the lake while their parents sat down at a bench and watched then happily. Some people were reading different kinds of books while others played board games.

They came across a brown puppy held back by a lish. It was very cute that Kimberly couldn't resist. She loved playing with puppies, especially the cute ones.

She gently pulled Evans and walked towards the dog owner and asked her if they could pet the puppy. The owner agreed. Kimberly was delighted and proceeded petting the puppy. She had fun petting the puppy and the puppy enjoyed it too. Kimberly then noticed that Evans was approximately three meters away from the puppy. He stood in a way that indicated his fear for puppies. Both the owner and Kimberly were surprised that Evans was scared of such an adorable puppy.

Kimberly asked Evans, "Are you scared of puppies?" He quickly replied, “No" but his reaction said it all, he was scared, Kimberly laughed at him. They then continued walking in the park.

"By the way Evans, you look dashing" Kimberly praised.

Evans looked at Kimberly and replied, "Thanks. So do you."

Kimberly asked, "Tell me, do you have any plans after University?"

Evans was surprised, "Why do you ask?"

"I just want to know," she insisted.

"My dream is to be in a position of serving others," he replied.

"Wow! That is great. Don't let that dream die," then she stood in front of Evans, blocking his way. She pointed at him and said, "If you let it die, I will kill you," she laughed after seeing the reaction on his face. He looked very scared, like one who has seeing death.

"I'm just joking. I wouldn't do that," she assured and continued, "But on a serious note, don't give up on your dream Evans."

They continued walking and reached at a quiet place in the Park. It was surrounded by beautiful and colourful trees. It was on a hill like structure. The view was very amazing. Kimberly noticed how great the place was, so she told Evans to sit there. Without hesitating, Evans agreed to the idea because he too saw the greatness of the place.

They both sat down on a mat that Kimberly carried in her bag. She then pulled out a board game from the same bag. She asked Evans if they could play. At first he said that he wasn't good at Chess but Kimberly with her sweet charming character managed to convince him. They started playing Chess and surprisingly Evans was very good at it or maybe Kimberly was playing a losing game to boost Evan's confidence.

The time was now 5:30pm. Whenever Evans was with Kimberly, time seemed to be flying quickly than normal. The Park was almost closing and everyone went home.

Kimberly suggested that they go to watch a movie. Evans agreed and they went to a nearby theatre to watch a movie. Kimberly started liking Evans. But little did she know that Evans was already dating Emily. On the other hand, one of Emily's Friend was at the movie theatre with her boyfriend. She saw Evans and Kimberly having fun.

CHAPTER 4: THE DATE

Days flew by like an eagle fishing in the deep blue sea. A week had passed since Evans and Kimberly visited the Park. Everyday Evans and Kimberly walked home together. Every time an incident would happen were Evans would forget his stop and realize that he passed his place because they had an amazing time.

On a Wednesday morning Evans went to the University. As he entered campus, he saw Emily and her friends talking. He decided to go over to them since it had been long since he spoke to them.

He approached them and greeted them but they didn't respond. He wondered why they were quiet. He tried greeting them for the second time but with no success. Then Emily and her friends turned and started walking away. Evans was confused, he went in front of them and stopped Emily. Evans was immediately slapped by Emily.

Evans was more confused. He asked Emily," Why did you slap me, Emily?" He touched his cheek.

"How many girlfriends do you have?" Emily asked Evans angrily. She was furious. She continued, "Do you think I'm a toy? That you could play with me anyhow?"

Evans had no idea of what Emily was talking about. He stood in front of her speechless. He didn't want to offend Emily even more. He then asked politely, "What are you talking about?"

Emily looked at her friend and said to her, "Natasha, please tell this idiot what he did. He's trying to play dumb with me."

Natasha responded," Evans, you were with a lady at the movies and you were having so much fun," she continued, "I could tell that you were very close because of the way you interacted with her. You didn't think of Emily once."

Evans now knew what the main cause of the argument was. He tried to tell her everything, "No. She is my supervisor." But Emily did not buy the excuse.

She continued yelling at him," So you chose a supervisor over me? What do you take me for?"

When she finished yelling at Evans, she left with her friends. Evans was hurt. He begun to blame Kimberly for everything that had happened. He didn't feel like learning that day. He decided to go home.

He sat down on a chair. He had made himself a cup of tea. He's friends came over but he wasn't paying attention to what they were saying. In anger they left Evans alone. He didn't even know that they had left him alone. He was brainstorming ideas on how to make it up to Emily. He concluded that he would take her out on a dinner date.

When Evans went to work, he worked so hard that every employee was pleased with him.

Mr Walker Loved the way he handled things. He decided to give him a reward. Mr Walker called Evans to his office.

He entered the small but tidy office and sat down facing Mr Walker. Evans was somehow scared because he has never been called into the manager's office. Mr Walker saw his fear and assured him, "Don't worry Evans. It's actually good news." Evans was relieved to hear the assurance.

Mr Walker said, "For the past few weeks you have been working so hard. For that I'm very pleased. I want to reward you for that. Because few of my employees work hard as you do," he paused for a while and asked, "What can I offer you?"

Evans thought for a while. He remembered that he had an argument with Emily. He replied," I really don't want much from you. If you would be kind to let me have a date here with my girlfriend, the bill should be on the house, I would really appreciate it."

Mr Walker replied in delight, "Is that all? The place is all yours And yes don't worry about the bill."

Evans was very excited to hear the reply. When he walked out of the office he quickly phoned Emily and told her to get ready that the next day they were going to have dinner. Emily was not interested but Evans managed to convince her.

The next day evening, Evans went to pick up Emily at her house. She was looking lovely. She wore expensive clothes to suit the occasion. She had a feeling that they were going to a very fancy and expensive restaurant.

They walked from Emily's place to the restaurant. When they reached at the restaurant, Emily was confused.

She told Evans, "Please tell me that we are not going in there."

"We have a reservation here," Evans explained.

Emily looked at the restaurant from the ground to the roof and said, "So you brought me here, infact we walked here. Look at the clothes I'm wearing. They do not suit this environment," She then said to herself, "Anyway this is what I get for dating a brock guy."

"Let's go inside and get this over with," she said aloud.

They walked in and sat down near the window. Evans went at the counter and ordered food. He went back to his seat and popped up a story.

"Have you ever tried the Mexican Foods?" he asked.

"No. They look disgusting and tasteless," she replied.

"I'm sure if you try them, you would like them," he encouraged.

"What are your plans after University?" she asked.

"I want to be in a position of serving others."

Emily started laughing. From the way she laughed, it seemed like Evans said something so funny that made her laugh so much.

"Please don't joke with me. Tell me the truth," she demanded.

"I'm telling you the truth. That's my dream,"

"What a lame dream you have. Your friends have a dream of making more money and more luxury. They don't care about others. But you, you want to ---" she continued laughing.

Evans was demoralized because of the words she said. His face turned to sadness. He had lost all hopes he had in him.

Their food was brought by a waiter, Evan's friend. After all that happened Evans lost his appetite. Emily however helped herself to a plate full of Spaghetti and Meatballs with a side of salads.

Few hours later, Emily wanted to go home. They walked out of the door and into the streets. It was a dark and shadowing night. When they walked, they had a conversation going. This conversation was one sided. Emily talked about herself and the things she would want to have.

Their walk in the dark reminded Evans of Kimberly and him.

He started thinking: "Kimberly is very loving, caring and supportive. She pulls me up when people pull me down. But why is it that Emily is the complete opposite of Kimberly." All these things were going through Evan's head. He was lost in his thoughts that he forgot that Emily was even there and still talking.

"So what do you think? Emily asked.

Evans flinched to his senses and looked at Emily. He was confused because he was not paying attention to her. He asked her what she was saying. Emily explained to Evans what she said earlier. Evans thought that it was something new but she was asking him if he could take her on a date in a luxurious place next time.

After that night with Emily, Evans started considering the relationship between him and Emily.

CHAPTER 5: VALENTINE'S ACCIDENT

It was a beautiful day on. It was Valentine's day. Love was in the air. The town was decorated with beautiful roses with red and black colours. The day started out like a normal day, except that it was Valentine's.

Evans thought of surprising Emily so he bought a red dress for her. Meanwhile Kimberly also bought a simple wrist watch for Evans. Kimberly hoped that Evans would like it, if he wouldn't love it.

Evans started his journey to see Emily at noon. He was walking smoothly and full of confidence. As he walked, Kimberly saw him stopped and him on the way.

Kimberly looked very beautiful, she had make up and plaited her hair. She wore a long black dress with a red belt around her waist. She wore flat black shoes. She looked like a movie star going for a photo shoot.

She looked at Evans with a sweet smile, "Hey Evans," she greeted him.

"Yes Kim," he replied in a quick tone.

"Where are you going? Then she looked at him in a weird way and said, "Let me guess. Your answer will be -- nothing," they both giggled.

Evans was caring the dress he bought for Emily in a present bag. Kimberly thought that Evans bought her a present.

"Is that for me?” she asked curiously.

     "No," he replied.

"Oh, hmmm. Anyway, I bought you this watch, I hope you like it," she explained.

But Evans was in a hurry to leave. He left quickly while he said bye.

Kimberly was hurt. She thought that he would have had at least time to look at the watch. She went to the Park and sat alone.

When Evans reached at Emily's house, she found Emily taking selfies with her five best friends. He walked towards them and called Emily. Emily saw him and gave the phone to one of the friends and went to Evans.

"You are here. What have you bought for me?" she asked while looking at the bag.

"Open it." he pulled out a box and handed it to Emily. He had a feeling that the dress would melt Emily's heart. He had a big smile on his face as Emily was opening the present.

"What is this?" she asked holding the dress like it was trash.

"It is a dress," Evans said before Emily's friends started laughing. They laughed their hearts out.

"You call this a dress. This is the type of thing that my father uses to clean his car. So you expect me to wear this?" she asked.

"Sorry I thought you would like it" apologized Evans.

"Like it? Maybe this will answer your question. What are my friends doing?" she asked while pointing at her friends.

     "They are laughing," he replied.

"And why do you think they are laughing?" she asked angrily.

Evans had no words, he was hart broken. He took the dress and left sadly.

As Evans was walking he came across a highway. Evans continued thinking about the words spoken by Emily. He was deep in his thoughts that he did not pay attention to the road ahead. In a blink of an eye -- Evans was hit by a white van.

Blood was coming out from his head and hand like water. Everyone that saw the accident went to Evans. They felt bad for Evans because he was loosing a lot of blood. One of the people at the scene recognized him as an employee of "Food Restaurants." He quickly called the supervisor to inform her of the accident. Few minutes later, an ambulance arrived at the scene and Evans was taken to the hospital.

CHAPTER 6: MY HEART

After few days, Evans finally regained conscious. When he woke up from his sleep, he was frightened to sew several doctors looking at him as if they were waiting for him to say or do something.

The doctors were very excited to see him blinking and moving his body quietly.

One of the doctors said to the other, "It is good that he has woken up. Otherwise all our efforts would have gone down the drain."

Evans was confused to see the excitement of the doctors. He looked at one doctor and asked.

    "Why are you so excited?"

"Because we fulfilled a promise that we made," the doctor replied.

As he was about to ask the another question, a different doctor handed Evans a paper. The doctor's face was very sad. Evans wondered why the doctor was sad while the others were smiling.

He got the paper and saw that something was written on it. He held the paper nicely so that he could read what was written. It read:

________________________________________________________

    Dear Evans,

If you are reading this, that means that my prayer has been answered. I have prayed that one day you read this letter.

I admire your dream of serving others. But it seems as if I'm the one serving you. It's like I stole your dream because you stole my heart. I really like you. It's just unfortunate that I had to tell you this through a paper.

I want to clear this doubt; I worked at Food Restaurants because I wanted to earn enough money to cure my liver disease. I had only few months of living . Fortunately, I had saved enough money to pay for my operation, but I figured that you needed it more than I did. For that matter I gave you my heart and paid for your operation with the money that I saved.

It is safe to say that I left my heart with someone I love so dearly. If you died, I wouldn't have been myself. So for me to save two souls, I had to give up my heart, it is better to know that now we will be together ---- forever.

Now promise me Evans that you will find someone who will love you more than I ever loved you. I promise to be your guide for that.

     Love,

     Kimberly.

Evans cried his eyes out. The doctors tried to comfort him but they failed. He was heart broken. He was filled with great grief. He was not himself. The doctors felt pity for Evans.

After several minutes a doctor explained," Son, when you had an accident, you had hurt yourself badly. Because of that your heart was not responding in a normal way. You needed a heart transplant immediately. Or else you would have died. But consider yourself to be lucky. If it wasn't for her you would have died."

As soon as the doctor finished explaining, Evans yelled at them, "Get out!" The doctors understood his situation so they decided to give him some time to calm down. So the doctors left him alone but assured him that everything would be fine.

Evans cried day and night. Two days straight, He then begun to have flashbacks of the pointless times that he spent with Emily when he should have been with Kimberly. He also remembered the words of his friends, " This girl is not good for you, she only wants money," He asked himself how he was so blind not to see Kimberly's love and all that she went through.

After hours of thinking, he realized that he too loved Kimberly but it was too late for him to tell her. He didn't know what to do.

After he was discharged from the hospital. The first thing that he did was to break up with Emily. He then went to Food Restaurants and asked an employee where Kimberly lived. The least he could was visit the family and offer his condolences.

The employee give Evans Kimberly's address. He appreciated the favor from his fellow employee. He quickly went over to visit the family.

He reached at a very quiet housing unit and saw a man seating under a tree. The man had a news paper in his hands. He was very focused. As Evans continued watching, a cute little girl walked to the man seating under the tree, she came from the house. The man was delighted after seeing her. Evans knew that the man seating under the tree was Kimberly's father because the little girl resembled Kimberly.

Evans approached Kimberly's father quietly. Kimberly's father noticed him and stood up. The man asked the girl to bring a chair for Evans. Kimberly's father did not know Evans facially but he knew his name because Kimberly had told him about Evans.

Kimberly father greeted Evans, "How are you?"

Evans replied with delight, "I'm fine sir, how are you?"

     "I'm fine," he responded.

Kimberly's father requested, "May I know who you are." He spoke very calmly and swiftly.

Evans could only imagine the reaction of Kimberly's father the moment he mentions his name. For that matter, he delayed to respond. But he knew that sooner or later the man needed to know the truth. He gathered strength and begun to speak:

"I was your daughter's co-worker, she was my supervisor. I'm Evans --- " Then suddenly Kimberly's father stood up, Evans followed. The calmness and swiftness disappeared. There was anger in his eyes.

"How dare you show your face here?" he asked in an angry tone, he continued," Aren't you satisfied with what you have done already? You took away one of my happiness." Evans felt sad, he could not respond or do anything. He only faced the ground.

He continued, "Kimberly took care of us. I cannot work anymore because of my disability, Kimberly was the breadwinner of this family. I don't even know how we are going to survive."

Evans finally managed to calm him down. It took everything to bring him to stability. As they were talking, Evans made a promise to Kimberly's father.

He promised, "Just as your daughter was by my side, I promise to be by your side. I will always serve you."

Evans knew that his dream was now a reality. He stood by Kimberly's father in good times and in bad. He began sponsoring Kimberly's sister at school. Whenever he would look at Kimberly's sister, he saw Kimberly smiling. That made Evans very happy. He didn't want anything more than the happiness of Kimberly's family.

When Evans graduated from University, he quickly found a stable job that paid him handsomely. He used his first salary to buy a house for Kimberly's father. When Kimberly's sister was fifteen, Evans got her to stay with him.
