It was Diwali. Everyone in the apartment building gathered on the empty plot adjacent to the building bursting crackers, laughing, and shouting. The watchman's four-year-old daughter watched them in amazement. She had no new clothes, no footwear and crackers were a forbidden dream.

She eyed at the boxes of crackers kept near the gate and yarned for them. She had resisted its temptation out of fear of being scolded. She mustered up all her courage to ask a boy of her age to let her hold one cracker for a while and made a silent plea that he agrees.

Salty tears streamed down her cheeks as she remembered how her mother had asked to maintain a distance from the people in the apartment building as they were super rich and her disobedience might cause her father his job as well it was next to impossible to find a decent job during the pandemic.

She was snapped back to reality when she felt someone's hand on her little shoulder

s. It was perhaps the boy's mother, she was frozen out of fear. But the lady's smile bought her a touch of solace. The lady gave her a packet nodding assuringly towards her panicked mother. She went with the packet near mother and both were spelled to find a pink frock and a pair of slippers inside. She got dressed combed her hair and headed towards the gate again. A few kids came near her one of them grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the boxes of crackers. Seeing her reluctant someone put a box of crackers in her hand. She was happy as her plea didn't go unheeded. She burst crackers, laughed, played, and danced with the kids. She was shocked when the elders took pictures of the children keeping her in the frame.

When she returned to her parents' quarter near the gate was surprised to find sweets and delicacies awaiting her. Finally, the cobwebs of her parents' apprehensions about being not accepted as following other faith were cleared.
