Fairy Lights

Yesterday night, my niece who is 10 years old came to my room. I study in Pune but due to lockdown, I came to my hometown. I love being home so it is the best time I can accept that. I was lying in my bed doing nothing great, just randomly scrolling my Instagram feed. In my room, there are blue color fairy lights which are kept switched on in the night. She came to me, sat beside me, and asked me, 'why you put fairy lights in the room?' I said I like them so I put them but again she kept on saying, 'tell me, what is the reason for you to like them' when I haven't put them earlier as I put them when I came from Pune.

There is a story behind these fairy lights which I don't want to share with anybody. But I knew if I didn't tell her she would keep on asking that stuff. But I was very stubborn and kept on saying that 'no, there is no particular reason' till that time my mom came with a smoothie for me and her and seeing us arguing, she asks what happened. My niece made a puppy face and told her, 'I want to know the reason behind the fairy lights but di(elder sister) is not telling me'. I was like 'why me?' My mom told me to tell her.

Anyhow then I had to do it. So I started telling her that I had given various exams and clearly cracked most of them and I was waiting for the most important result of that college which I wanted to crack. One day before that result I was sitting in my room and watching the web series " FAIRY LIGHTS ". When the result came I was not selected and the same thing happened in the web series also. Anyhow, I decided to go to my 2nd choice of college. I was trying to forget that failure. I joined my college in Pune, being homesick I was facing a lot of difficulty in the 1st semester. Being in hostel making new friends, once my friend asked me for notes so I gave them to her and forgot to give till midnight. As I had very early morning class and she was not picking up the phone, so I decided to go to her room and bring back my notes. I went to her room and asked for my notes. When I entered her room, I saw fairy lights in her room which was put by her roommate. I came back to my room but those fairy lights reminded me of everything that happened with me. I decided to put fairy lights in my hostel room as well as photos of my family. This helped me in two ways. Firstly, I could feel the presence of my family members always. Secondly, I could remember those series, which as at the end of the series say everything happens for a reason. My niece fell asleep by listening to this but my mom said that these fairy lights are like stars in my life which will always bring new hope and make my life beautiful. Like stars are always there whenever the moon is there or not, similarly, hopes and happiness are always there.
