Cooking Trouble

It was my parent's wedding anniversary. Kids usually make cards in order to wish their parents, but my brother and I had different plans. We felt that cooking up a meal would be a good surprise. We planned to make biryani since our parents loved it and baking a cake, as a sweet item wasn't a bad idea at all. So, it was decided that we were going to cook and bake.

My parents had plans for their day too. They were going for a movie, the whole morning and would be back by noon. So, we had enough time to be ready with our surprise. We had all the ingredients. We baked the cake first, the biryani would taste better if it were warm. First, we spent a lot of time assembling the ingredients and later got started.

Baking a cake seemed like a child's play but getting the measurements right was nerve-wracking. Thankfully, mother's cookbook was always handy in the kitchen. We separated the wet and dry items, then slowly added the wet mixture into the dry one and finally were ready with our batter. Then, we kept it in the oven and soon the cake was ready too. We decorated it with icing and chocolate cream and kept it in the refrigerator. Now, we were left with the biryani.

We were amateurs and had very little patience. For the preparation of the rice, we used a pressure cooker. We washed the rice but forgot to add water in the pressure cooker. We waited and waited but the whistle did not blow. Suddenly, the cooker began to rattle and before we realised it, all the rice was out! We stared at each other too shocked for words and then began to clean up. We had never tried cooking before, only baking was something that we used to help mom with.

A little after this disaster, our parents reached home and we were the ones surprised. We braced ourselves for a good scolding, but seeing our frightened faces, they were more relieved to see us safe. They appreciated our effort. Whenever they would see us we would only be lazing, doing no productive work. Who would have ever thought we could also cook? We had to order lunch that day and the cake turned out good. So, it was a sweet day with a sweet surprise, of course!
