Shruti adjusted the pleats of her maroon silk saree, catching her reflection in the hallway mirror. Her younger sister, Ananya, was already at the dining table, sneaking bites of gulab jamun before dinner.

“Anu! At least wait for the guests,” Shruti scolded playfully, swatting away her hand from the dessert bowl.

Ananya grinned, popping the sweet into her mouth. “Life’s too short to wait for good food.”

It was their parents’ 50th wedding anniversary, and the house was alive with relatives, childhood friends, and neighbors. The spacious Delhi bungalow smelled of jasmine and roses. Their mother’s favourite flowers. The scent of their home never changed.

Shruti and Ananya had been inseparable since childhood—despite their differences. Shruti, the composed and responsible one, had taken over their father’s real estate business, while Ananya, the free spirit, ran an independent art gallery in Saket. Their bond had been the one constant in each other’s lives, through marriages, heartbreaks, career changes, and the everyday chaos of family. The sisters stood by each other in every crisis, big or small.

Their mother, Shobha, was stood in the middle of the living room, adjusting her diamond earrings as she greeted guests. Their father, Ramesh Kapoor, stood in a corner with sipping his scotch as he chatted with his old college friends, laughing loudly as they relived old memories.

As the evening progressed, one of their elderly uncles, slightly drunk on whiskey, waved and his raised his glass. “Ladies and gentlemen, I want to raise a toast… Shobha and Ramesh.”

Everyone took notice and raised their glasses.

Uncle continued,”Shobha, Ramesh, congratulations on your anniversary. You two are such a beautiful couple. Best Life parters…And such wonderful parents! To take in an orphaned child as your own and never let her feel different—this is what family truly means! Cheers to you two.” Uncle gulped his drink.

The room fell silent.

Shruti felt the floor shift beneath her feet. She turned to look at Ananya, whose smile had frozen.

“What are you talking about, Uncle?” Ananya asked, her voice unnervingly steady.

The old man blinked, as if suddenly realizing his mistake. “Oh… you didn’t know?”

The silence deepened. A few guests exchanged nervous glances, and someone cleared their throat. Shobha’s hand trembled as she set down her glass.

Ananya looked at Shruti and then her parents. “Maa?” Shruti’s voice was barely a whisper.

Shobha closed her eyes, took a deep, breath,”Anu… we were going to tell you, but there was never a right time.”

Ananya stood still, as if turned to stone. “Tell me what?”

Ramesh put a protective hand on his wife’s shoulder. “You were adopted, Anu.”

Shruti sucked in a breath. The words echoed in the air, sharp and unforgiving.

Ananya let out a short, hollow laugh. “What? This is some joke, right?”

Shobha’s eyes glistened with unshed tears. “No beta. It’s true.”

The laughter died on Ananya’s lips. Shruti instinctively reached for her sister’s hand, but Ananya stepped back.

“All these years,” Ananya whispered. “You never told me?”

“We never wanted you to feel different, Anu,” Ramesh said trying to calm Ananya. “You are our daughter. Always have been.”

“But I am different,” Ananya said, her voice rising. “All these years, I thought Didi and I were real sisters, that we had the same blood, the same roots. But it was a lie!”

Shruti flinched at the words. She had always believed that nothing could shake their bond—but this revelation had cracked something.

Ananya turned to her sister. “Didi, Did you know?”

“I did!” Shruti said.

Ananya was flabbergasted.

Ananya let out a shaky breath, then looked at their parents,”I need some air.” She walked out, leaving behind an awkward, suffocating silence.

Shruti found Ananya sitting on the terrace, knees drawn to her chest, staring at the city lights. The air was thick with the scent of night-blooming jasmine.

“Anu…” Shruti sat down beside her.

“Don’t.” Ananya’s voice was quiet but firm. “Just… give me a minute.”

Shruti waited, the night humming around them. She had always known how to comfort Ananya, but tonight, she wasn’t sure if anything she said would help.

Finally, Ananya spoke. “I spent my whole life thinking I belonged to this family in the same way you did. And now… I don’t know who I am.”

Shruti swallowed. “You’re still the same person, Anu.”

Ananya turned to her, her eyes glistening. “Am I? Maybe I don’t even belong here.”

“Don’t say that!” Shruti reached for her sister’s hand, this time not letting go when Ananya tried to pull away. “I don’t care what biology says. You’re my sister. We’ve shared everything—our childhood, our secrets, our dreams. Blood doesn’t change that.”

Ananya took a deep breath. “It’s just… hard to process. I feel like a stranger now.”

Shruti squeezed her hand. “You’re not. And you never will be. You belong here, with us, with me.”

Silence stretched between them, but this time, it wasn’t heavy—it was filled with unspoken love.

After a long pause, Ananya exhaled and leaned her head on Shruti’s shoulder. “I don’t know if I can ever forgive them for not telling me.”

Shruti nodded. “That’s up to you. But just remember, they love you. We all do.”

Ananya closed her eyes, letting the night wrap around them. “I know.”

Shruti smiled, pressing a kiss to her sister’s hair. “Good. Because you’re stuck with me forever, adopted or not.”

Ananya laughed softly, wiping away a stray tear. “Well, I was planning to move in with you when we’re old and cranky, so I guess you’re right.”

“See?” Shruti grinned. “Some things never change.”

And in that moment, love triumphed over blood.
